Josephine and her crew were incredibly welcoming to us considering we had no idea the situation there and didn't realize that we needed a day pass to come visit it. They were warm and welcoming and we had one of the best meals that we had in Mexico there. The sunset there is absolutely credible and I really like that they have a new photographs policy which ensures the privacy of their guests.

Serene and beautiful with bungalows that really allow you to sink into calm. LOVED the pool and special offerings they had each day for guests. What really left an impression was the personal attention and hospitality from management. Felt taken care of!

We had a good stay - beautiful location directly on the beach, with a big pool. Great place to get away and enjoy the coast. Food is so so, lunch better than dinner. Omakase restaurant is worth trying.

Beautiful and off the beaten path. If you want and intimate and private stay near Puerto Escondido, this is the place. About 45 minutes away from town, it makes great for an escape from the noise.

Food was amazing.

This is 5 stars for very specific reasons. Please understand what this hotel is and what it is not. It is beautiful. It is private and secluded. It is romantic. The service is minimalist yet sufficient. The staff is fantastic. The food was really really good. The rooms are in individual palapa style huts and are perfectly appointed. The private plunge pools with ocean views are phenomenal. The constant sound of wind and waves is divine.

Come here if you want to get away from hustle, traffic and all the people. Come here if you want to be stuck in paradise for a while. You can stay connected enough to not feel completely shut off from the world.

This hotel is not many things. This place is not big. It is not close and it takes a while go get to from Puerto. The last 3 miles is on a bumpy dirt road. It is not crowded. There isn't shopping. The restaurant choices are phenomenal but limited. The beach isn't for swimming, surfing or really anything other than to look at and listen to.

Don't come here with kids. Don't come here if you want to be around kids. Don't come here expected every amenity. Don't come here if you want to go shopping or choose a different restaurant for every meal. Don't come here if you gain energy from people and crowds and the buzz of a city.

Be certain about what you are looking for in your vacation. If what you want is a true getaway from it all type of vacation, this is the best I've ever been to and wholly recommend Hotel Escondido.

Location is attractive and seclude @ Playa Vigía.
Food is very nice presented and fresh.
Service is on point and on time.
Rooms are very nice to be in and it has TV, Sky, Minisplit, robe, beach bag, sandals, mini bar fridge, two sink bathroom, separate bathroom and shower. Good Snacks, and the bed is very comfy mattress and pillows. Beach is beautiful, sea is always making waves so not everyone can go in unless you know how to avoid the wipe outs. During the day the AC will not make room cool because rooms are kinda rustic imitating a roof bungalow and they are not completely sealed in the sliding doors and windows. At night room is cool enough to enjoy a good night sleep listening to the waves and bug life outside.

We loved our stay and definitely will come back in the future.

Hotel Escondido is truly a hidden gem and an amazing experience.

The palapas are comfortable and spacious and having the private pool and outdoor area was lovely. Despite the palapa not being fully enclosed (ie there are screens on the sliding wood doors) they cool down quickly at night and we slept very comfortably with the AC. Reading previous reviews — little geckos crawling on the walls are part of the experience! Harmless. We weren’t bothered by any bugs either.

The main pool area is stunning, and having basically a private beach is unbeatable. The surf isn’t “calm” but it was perfectly swimmable and enjoyable.

Food and drinks were really delicious and the staff is so kind and helpful. It was great to see familiar faces each day and chat. Breakfast and lunch have plenty of variety, dinner is prix-fixe with two separate options that seemed to also accommodate vegetarians. They also offer activities in the area if you want to go off the property, but we were perfectly content not leaving for the duration of our stay.

Wifi exists and works perfectly well for phone scrolling, FT-audio calls, and light computer chores (email), but I wouldn’t plan to be taking
any video calls/presentations etc. while here.

We definitely plan to come back as often as we can!

I guess a lot of the negative reviews are based on wrong assumptions. This place is pure paradise if you are aware of the fact that it's a looong way from everything. Basically you're IN nature. And while the design of the suites tries to keep "ze bugs" out, there will always be the odd one sneaking in or (more often than not) it's simple negligence on the urbanized guest´s part to not use the shutters, sandsacks etc. provided properly to secure parts that otherwise can't be secured. Some basic awareness of your surroundings would be a pro-tip.
The whole idea of the place is simplicity, closeness to nature, seclusion, albeit with an lovely eye for design.
The restaurant - for the longest time the only one available in the area, a few years ago a sort-of izakaya opened down the trail - is wonderful! Although choices depend on daily local availability and season, there's always two choices for each course and the kitchen team just works magic to created amazingly varied, creative and tasty offerings, worthy of some of the best CDMX restaurants for sure!
The staff is laid-back but attentive and friendly and makes sure you're feeling welcome. Most troubles I got aware of on my frequent stays there, were mostly caused by over-zealous attitudes of guests expecting to pay for servitude instead of solitude...
To sum it up: this place may not be for everyone, certainly not for the posh folks with attitude to match, but for people who get the appeal of utmost privacy, simplicity and tranquility.
I mentioned frequent stays. It's certainly one of my happy places, for sure!
And I will be back.

Exquisite out of the way small resort. Thatched hut casitas are delightful and partially air conditioned. Great food and wonderful staff. Fabulous beach. Highly recommend.

*Over-exceeded my expectations of a nice, relaxing resort!! Loved everything about it, from the modern rooms, to the private plunge pools, to all the hammocks, to the ocean being a few steps from each villa!! The community pool is insanely gorgeous and the drinks were phenomenal! Staff was knowledgeable & friendly. If I could give more stars I definitely would!*

Beautiful wild sandy beach with no people for kilometers. Service was great! Everyday hotel proposed interesting activities like turtle release, salsa and taco cooking classes On the beach or hikes. Massage was amazing and food was very tasty. Definitely will recommend the place to my friends.

Stunning hotel with incredible design. We did not stay here and only came for lunch, but definitely planning to come back for a stay in the future. Food was good and fairly priced! The gazpacho was one of the best I’ve ever had. Ceviches and the pulpo tacos were very good too!

Service - Amazing. Staff was friendly, polite, and just all around great. Things werent typically expedient, but it was hard to do anything in a rush at hotel Escondido.

Food - Delicious and handsome. The food was great quality Oaxacan food (as described by my Oaxacan girlfriend, not me) and it was well decorated. The shrimp burger and las enfrijoladas were two of our highlights. We also LOVED the fresh fruit and honey at breakfast.

Drinks - cocktails are delicious. Almost all of them were great, just depends on taste. Our favorites, jalapeno mezcal and aguacate mezcal. We didn't delve into wine too much, but the wine we had was good!

Ambience - extremely romantic, cozy, couple-oriented. Personal infinity pools screened from other rooms. For a fee, you can do a romantic candlelit dinner on the beach and the staff will put rose petals and candles in your room and set up a bonfire for you and your significant other. Maybe best for proposals and such but this was incredibly well done by the staff!

Everything is so well put together, if you are thinking about disconnecting from the city buzz, this is your place. There is literally nothing to do but relax and listen to the rumbling sounds of the waves in a hammock on your private pool / villa. Staff could sometimes be more present, but the facilities and the scenery make up for it.

Heaven on earth. Not sure what other people are moaning about, you are in nature more or less what do you expect? Service is top, people are top, food amazing, and one of the few places where I was happy to sit and do absolutely nothing, just be sure to be a guest and enjoy this splendid hotel.

Best hospitality experience I have had so far. The private beach is amazing, far from the crowds and right in the middle of nowhere. This is seriously a birds nest. Time passes slowly listening the sounds of the jungle and the ocean.

Hotel Escondido was an escape of total serenity. They have great staff, impeccable service, the most romantic setting, delicious food, the relaxing sound of waves to soothe you all day and night, and good drinks (especially the tamarind smoothie). It's a remote location unlike any other, you are truly able to get away from life's daily distractions.

Although it's quite far from the main attractions of Puerto Escondido, it's worth the distance. You come here to rest, to enjoy the sounds of the ocean and pamper yourself with massages and sunsets. Once you're ready for an adventure, Lalo Ecotours does a great job of providing you with a wide variety of tours. We had a chance to check out a bioluminescent tour at night, and rode horses through rivers and lush mountains until we reached a hidden mountain with hot springs of all temperatures.

Time at Hotel Escondido does not exist, the days are long and you are able to unwind for hours on the beach or by the pool. When you want to take a walk along the beach, you will encounter many friends, crabs crawling in and out of their holes. They do get shy, so just sit on the sand and you will be able to observe their movements. Besides crabs you are surrounded by a wide variety of wildlife. I had the opportunity to see a beautiful green snake, a hummingbird, a lot of lizards, and dragonflies. But the most beautiful creatures of all were Taylor and Clyo, two loyal labradors roaming around the hotel, and accompanying you for dinner under the moonlight.

This hotel is highly recommended. If you can, give yourself the opportunity to escape to this quiet place in the middle of nowhere, it's really quite wonderful and unreal.

Amazing everything- staff, food (local produce, amazing tortillas, top notch ingredients, perfect cocktails and mezcal), comfy beds, fabulous bath products (they smell like honey and it’s intoxicating in a very good way), the sounds of nature all day (thunderous waves, birds, crickets, geckos), scenery (dessert gardens right up to the ocean, sunset, empty beaches for miles and miles). This place is the perfect place to get away from everything— it’s in the middle of nowhere, far from city pressures, and you can do nothing all day long.... perfection! A note on lunch: portions are HUGE. I recommend sharing one menu item at lunch so you’ll have room for the epic 3 course dinner. The crowd is mostly pretty laid back millennials and gen x-ers— not a party hotel. It’s a place for peace seeking epicureans, with and eye toward design and things off the beaten track. We’ll be back most certainly.
