Monumento a Miguel Hidalgo

Monument dedicated to one of the main Mexican independence heroes. One of the main landmarks of this plaza.

Independence Day (Día de la Independencia) is a Mexican holiday to celebrate the “cry of independence” on September 16, 1810, which started the revolution against the Spaniards. The Spanish monarchy had ruled for almost 300 years, and the fight went on for 11 years.

On this day the country remembers, the priest Miguel Hidalgo who rang the church bell in the small town of Dolores, Guanajuato. He gathered the community in the town square. In that historic moment, he inspired the townsfolk to rise up in arms, thus beginning the rebellion against Spain. A fantastic statue of Miguel Hidalgo is in the Plaza de la Liberación. Av.
