it was amazing to find a shop like shyam indian sweet in myanmar. the traditional indian sweets i tasted here were as good as the ones we get in places like chandni chowk in delhi. the preparation was excellent and the shop was overflowing with clients.

My family has its roots in Faizabad in Ayodhya. We are brahmins. We are in the business of manufacturing and selling of traditional Indian sweets. Our traditional sweets are popular not just with Indian community but with people of other religions as well. The local Burmese are also fond of our sweets. Initially our clients were only Hindus and Indians but gradually others developed a taste for the Indian sweets. Our products are being sold in many prominent cities of Myanmar. This business was started by my aged father who is still there to guide us and bless us. My father inspired many other Hindus in our relationship and circle to start the business of manufacturing and selling Indian sweets. This business was started by my father around 45 years ago. My father now 74 years old, very much there and he has seen the success of our venture. So far as this shop Shyam Indian Sweets is concerned, it is around thirty years old. My great grandfather who worked with railways initially, later on started dealing in fabrics. At that time my grandfather used to visit India in connection with his business as both India and Myanmar were under the British Empire.

Some of our most popular, in great demand and hot selling items include the tradition Indian sweets- cham cham, kalakand, sohan papdi and rasogullas. We do prepare gujias but their demand is not that much. We do not sell by weight but we sell our sweets on a piece to piece basis. Our best sweets cost one usd for four pieces.

In our home we are trying to follow and live by our Hindu traditions to the extent it is possible here in Myanmar. Through the Hindi and Nepalese classes in the temple we are trying to inculcate interest of our children into our traditions and culture. When the normal education is going in the Burmese schools then the children are not able to devote much time to the education related to our own religion, language and culture. It is only during the summer vacation that we can persuade them to focus on these areas and we are doing our best to do so. We have a total of five teachers here. One for Hindi and four for Nepalese.
