Not a typical castle. Spent one afternoon with little ones. Cute place and lots of fun for kids to play around, looking inside every house.

Āraiši park is small but cute and informative. The water settlements are unique and the small museum is quick to browse throughand have a brief overview of the past and the work done to rebuild this site.

Very interesting museum if you're into history (of the region) or archaeology. Everything is very well explained in the exposition and there is a lot of information on the artifacts and buildings, also in English. Staff is very nice and the reconstructions are incredible. I would highly recommend visiting!

Remarkable place, which you cannot leave but excited. Indeed, not in many places you can see dwellings dating back to 9 century, and being not a Disneyland. You came to appreciate the way people leaved more than 1000 years ago, and clearly see their concerns were very similar to yours.

We drove a long way to see this place. We live in an area of West Africa with stilt villages on the lake so this archeological site is very similar. It was neat.

For only two euros you get to see expositions from different ages of the people who inhabited these lands since the Stone Age. Araisi Lake Fortress is worth the visit alone.

A fantastic place to kindle your imagination about life in ancient times. The centrepiece of the site is a reconstructed settlement on an island in the middle of a lake. It will transfer you back to the 9-10 centuries AD and immerse you in the atmosphere of an ancient Latgalian community in the north-eastern Europe where pre-Christian cultures were still thriving at the time. The Araiši settlement is certainly on par with Scottish crannogs and the pile dwelling site on Lake Konstanz in Germany, but is far less know and is a true archaeological gem off the beaten track

The nearby romantic ruins of a mediaeval castle tell the story of a very different epoch, and offer a nice place for a picnic with a view of the lake settlement.

Finally, there is a path to much more ancient days, with reconstructed Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age dwellings. Some of the path is on a low-lying ground, mind, so putting on your wellies might be a good idea in a wetter season.

Great site! Impressive to see these little wooden houses on the lake. It's very interesting to see this kind of architecture and sight in a country where the Soviet architecture dominate. There are also some ruins of an old castle and a prehistoric settlement on the side.

Great chance to have a realistic look at how our ancestors lived 1100 years ago.

Very interesting place, museum has a lot of information and excavated items. Reconstructed Latgalian medieval village is just amazing. Remains of fortress and ancient stone age settlement reconstructions are also nice.

Exhibition hall is new and informative. WC is clean and modern. Outside house reconstructions help to visualize the original setting.
