The station is less busy and lonely compared to others. As it is in a boarder of the sanctuary of Horton Plains, trekkers are used to get down at Ohiya and walk up to the entrance of the Horton Plains national park. The atmosphere of the station resembles that of a natural forest reserve.

Ohiya railway station is one of major and important railway station. To go to the Horton plains, it needs to drop here who are arriving by train. Normally it is more cold climate this station. It belongs to Badulla district.

Located between Pattipola and Idalgashinna railway stations in Badulla railway line. This is most convenient station for backpackers as this is the shortest way to enter Horton plains national park by foot. There are few local lodging places around stations, but better to book advance. Local cafeteria is located in front of station for short meal and hot drinks. Three wheels (tuk tuk) can hire from ohiya to visit Horton Plains National Park if you really want to save travel time.
