Beware of the wild elephants when you are traveling to the temple. Better to visit the temple in the morning. Road to the temple is in good condition and you can park the vehicle in the car park and walk to the temple

Peaceful and serene place of worship about 6km from Ampara.
It’s great if you can visit in the evening or it will be too hot. There is a car park available and a few shops which serves fresh orange juice etc .
The newly built huge statue is iconic and is a place that is must be visited if you visit Ampara.

The Buddhangala Monastery lies deep in the jungles about 7 kilometers off Ampara. The Monastery covers 1280 acres covering 5 rocks where the remains of the ancient monastery can be seen.

This area belonged to the Digamadulla Kingdom which was started by Prince Dighayu in the 4th century BC. All though the beginning of this monastery is not documented, Ven Ellawala Medhananda Thero states that the history of is monastery is as old as the Digamadulla Kingdom.

The original name of Buddhangala is not known, one belief is that the name is derived due the shape of the rock formation, which looks like Buddha in a lying position. The tamils and the the muslims who now occupy the land surrounding the hermitage area calls this “Buddhankalei” and the current Sinhalese name Buddhangala could have been derived from this.

This is one of the the longest standing oldest temples in Ampara district. If you go in the early morning or in the late evening you could walk around without getting a headache due to extreme heat. Climb up to the Buddha stature where you could get the best view of Amara...

Very calm full place which spread to lot of areas. New constructions are undergoing. Good parking space available. Be aware about monkeys when you are parking.

Buddangala rock monastery located in Ampara District has a significant importance in Buddhist culture. Its dagoba,(pagoda) has relics of Lord Buddha and Sariyuth and Mungalan maha there's. The place is surrounded with rocks. Some constructions are going on. Recommended to visit during g morning or evening. Its burning hot due to rocks. As hats and slippers are not allowed in temple these are ideal times. But do not visit after 5.00pm as there may be animals coming into the road. Short, skinnes are not allowed. Please wear clothes suitable for a temple.

Rising above the forest north of Ampara, this 150m-high hill offers panoramic views from its rocky summit (including, occasionally, of wild elephants at dusk). Buddangala is said to be 1800 years old, and when the old temple, the remains of which are to the left of the main shrine, was excavated in 1964, a gold casket containing a tooth of the Buddha was discovered. It’s now housed inside the dagoba and is on view every June for three days around poya (full moon) day.

One of the best temples I have ever visited with a surrounding forest wherein elephants rule. The environment is quiet & calm and met one wonderful monk - Bhikkhu Ananda. He epitomizes the serenity adorning the place. The place contains sacred relics of the disciples of Lord Buddha - which are taken out during the sacred days in Jun every year for special prayers.

Sacred place in Ampara. Noble monks lived here centuries ago. Still this sacred place is well maintained. You can enjoy very nice view on the buddhangala rock.
Do not try to go after 6pm because of elephant threats. Morning time is the best to visit. You should wear a proper suit and behave in this sacred place.

Buddhangala Monastery is situated in the middle of thick forest near Ampara town and the place is little known to public. Temple premises are built on larger rocks and the area is covering over thousand acres. The history of the monastry has been dated back to the Anuradhapura era and at that time this are called as Digamadulla.

At present, the area is somewhat developed and one can reach the premises through two routes around the rock plain. These roads run through thick forest which is a habitat of wild elephants. Therefore, travellers should be careful when visit the site.

Since, the entire site is archaeological reservation visitors are expected to protect the area and keep environment clean.
