Vankalai bird's Sanctuary

One of the best places in sri lanka for bird watching during migratory bird season (December, January). Lots of birds can be seen in shallow waters by the side of the road including greater flamingos if you are lucky. 15 minute drive from mannar along south cost road to vankalai. Birds can be seen by the side of Punarin road, Thaleimannar road including saltern and Madawachchiya road.

Mannar Bird Sanctuary is situated in Mannar in the northern province of Sri Lanka. This wetland area of 4,800 hectares was declared as a sanctuary in the year 2008. It is a popular sanctuary in the Northern Province especially for the migrating waterfowl. A majority of the birds found at the Mannar Bird Sanctuary are aquatic or semi-aquatic birds as it are located surrounding the Vankalai Lagoon.

Lovely birds flocking very early in the mornig. You need to be lucky to spot them in hundreds, but even less in number are still beautiful to watch.
