Mount Yōtei

Beautiful symmetrical mountain. Must be even more amazing during winter. Photo was taken beginning of June.

what an incredible day this was. climbed the northwest (hangetukohan) route in september. took me about 2 and a half hours on the way up and slightly longer on the way down. took my time on the summit and probably spent close to an hour and a half, so about 6.5 hours total. i came from sapporo using a JR pass, so i ended up having to walk an extra 5 miles back to kutchan on the way back, but it worked out great and still had plenty of time.

other than the lack of altitude sickness this hike is probably harder than fuji because it has slightly more altitude gain (compared to the yoshida trail) and is steeper, but i climbed it after fuji so for me it was easier.

despite the steep, muddy trails, i did perfectly fine without hiking shoes and was actually much better off with my max-cushion shoes which are way easier on the knees on the way down (i had no hiking poles).

A magnificent mountain to see on a clear sunny day. The locals call it Yōtei-zan & say it’s the ‘Fuji san’ of Hokkaido. 🇯🇵 Highly recommend the trip to Niseko Annupuri International Ski Area for best view of the mountain on a bluebird. 🇯🇵😎👍🏼

Make sure you're well prepared (almost 15 degrees less between the bottom and the top), have a good knowledge of the mountain (more than just a map), be in a group and have your avalanche gear.

Beautiful place! A lot of snow enen in March. For sure better than Alps

Took the Hirafu trail and started early. Was ok on way up but was hurting on the descent. My shoes were not quite up to the challenge and poles would have been good. Great views from top

Beautiful view! It does indeed look like a mini Mount Fuji, from the shape to the cloud coverage. The city is currently preparing the Mount Yotei viewpoint with snow carvings. Should be ready in a few days!

Caught a glimpse of Mount Yotei on the way from Lake Shikotsu to Cape Kamui. Managed to capture some shots in the car before it shrouds itself with the low hanging clouds.

The climb was tough and the decent was a pain but the view is great! Was there in the summer. Took the Makkari route.

Absolutely amazing views around the JR kutchan station area, went up to the park west of the station. At that period (early may) sakura were still in bloom!

A fun mountain for beginners. I took the Kutchan-route. During the climb I met many other climbers with whom I had small talks, which made it more fun

The town borders the south ward (Minami-ku) of Sapporo, but car traffic from Kyōgoku must drive over an hour through the Nakayama Toge mountain pass to enter Sapporo.

Tourists visit the town to drink the spring water in Fukidashi Park, where the water from Mount Yōtei bubbles out of the ground.

The town has a sister city relationship with the city of Marugame in Kagawa Prefecture.
Kyōgoku is mountainous, with several peaks above 1,000 metres (3,300 ft). The town sits between Mount Yotei to the east, and Mount Muine (1,464 metres (4,803 ft)), Mount Nakadake 1,387.8 metres (4,553 ft), and Mount Kimobetsu (1,176.9 metres (3,861 ft)) to the west.
The Shiribetsu River (126 kilometres (78 mi)), which emerges from Lake Shikotsu to the south, runs through Kyōgoku between Mount Yotei and the western peaks in the town. The river eventually flows into the Sea of Japan.

Me and 2 friends have climbed Mt Yotei 2 years in a row. Late March in 2017 and early April in 2018. Each time it has been a challenging trek and climb. This is a real mountaineering experience and should not be done without proper gear. On this 2018 climb the conditions were quite bad, snowing, overcast, but we were decided to go and attempt to summit. We brought a rope, crampons and ice-axe and used all of them to make it safely through the final hundred meters to the crater. If you have never done any mountaineering before, use a guide, it will save you time to find the right line up the mountain and improve safety. It took us 7h47 to the summit from Makkari park entrance. 11h20 round trip.

Amazing Trip, we lucked out with blue skies while summiting, and a beautiful twilight ride down the west aspect. Glorious!

A gorgeous mountain that resembles Mount Fuji. If you are in this area, it’s definitely worth a visit! I highly recommend this place.

It takes about 5-10 hrs (depending on how fast you can go) to hike up but really really worth it.
