Discovery International School is wonderful and was such a special part of our time living in Japan.

We moved to Nagoya in 2017 from the United States and our then 4 year old attended Discovery for 2 years before we returned home. She absolutely loved her time at Discovery. She learned so much, but even more importantly, she developed a true love for learning. We also enrolled our then 2 year old son in their toddler program. He too thrived in Discovery’s safe, loving and fun learning environment.

We miss this special school so much!

I taught at a K-12 international school in Nagoya along with Finbar. I was in the upper grades, but I had never seen an early education program like his. He encouraged his students to design their own landscape and garden for outside their building.The plan was so good that the administration agreed to it. That takes creativity, patience and a trust in little people to be excited about their own education.

I have been to his Discovery school location and it is easy to access and designed with a lot of natural light.The atmosphere was cheerful and the facility was safe with caring teachers. As a former resident of Nagakute, myself, this is a hidden gem!

As former Junior School Principal of Nagoya International School, I have had the pleasure of working with Finbar in the early years program before he stated his school. Finbar is passionate and knowledgeable in providing the best early years program that embraces a Reggio Emilia approach at Discovery International School. At Discovery International, the focus is not about just learning facts and memorizing, it's about treating each child as an individual, with a focus on inquiry, learner agency, social emotional development and as the name of the school infers, discovery. It's one of the best early years schools in Nagoya!

The atmosphere of Discovery is immersed in the Reggio Emilia pedagogy; this is reflected from the natural light-atelier influence seen in the building and room design, to a curriculum that celebrates the creator within each child. As an education professional, I take my pre-service teachers to observe the school each year, and am continuously impressed with the well-trained teachers, who are genuinely concerned for the care and healthy growth of each little person. The school has been certified by Aichi Prefecture and employees are all qualified early childhood staff. Still, it takes special on-site training in Reggio to accomplish the project-oriented programs witnessed at Discovery. As for the children, they all seemed at ease and happy in this place that was truly theirs, energetically devoted to exploration and discovery.

I was Finbar’s supervising teacher as he was completing his education degree from SUNY Brockport in New York State. In both his placements he demonstrated his dedication to his students and creativity in his instruction, relying heavily on the Reggio Emilia pedagogy. His students were engaged and enjoyed his lessons. He quickly established a positive relationship with each child who felt both safe and cared for. They obviously enjoyed learning from him. He was and is an excellent educator.

It is a great place for students to learn since they are a play-based curriculum. This means that they prioritized on the ideas and interest of the children. They also set out individualized and child-centered educational goals that are realistic and achievable.

I've been to the school. Excellent place for them to learn. The kids were always engaged and had an abundance of activities to keep them learning!

M ydaugther went to Discovery Internationa School when she was very little and she really enjoyed her time there! Thank you!
