The host makes sure you are comfortable in the accommodation. This Ryokan is privately run, we were very happy with the accommodation & our friendly host. She lights a wonderful fire on cool nights!

My husband and I had a very peaceful, relaxing evening here together. The food was outstanding. Enjoyed spending meals with other couples from around the world. It was a great way to relax before heading to Tokyo the next day!

Also, the showers were incredible!

The proprietress is a Wonder Woman - she cooks, cleans and welcomes guests all on her own and still able to keep the place running well!

It's true she communicates mainly in Japanese but if you choose to stay there, you're pursuing traditional Japanese living after all. To be fair, she articulates basic English such as the times for dinner, breakfast, check-in/out and lights out. That's all you really need to know; other details such as what to see and do in Shirakawa-go can be easily found online.

Overall, I enjoyed my stay and learnt what it felt authentic; something to try once in a lifetime (or a few times in a lifetime if you're the adventurous type :P

Very kind and helpful family owned hotel/Minshuku. You can experience local/seasonal/family food here and they are really delicious. I am not big fan of fancy Japanese food at big hotel, however I ate all of dinner here. Very nostalgic house and room. Keys to close doors are antique which were common in Japan and now it's rare to see.
No TV, fridge in the room of course since this is Minshuku. Bathroom (shower and Tub) and restroom is separare.
Breakfast is @7:30a, Dinner is @ 6p, Bath time is from 5-9p (you can also go to the hot spring place close to here by walk), Lights out is @10p.
I truly suggest here if you are interested in staying traditional/old Japanese style house instead of hotel.

Exquisite traditional Gassho-Zukuri house, at the end of the village. The woman taking care of us spoke almost no english, but it was not really needed. The whole experience was very authentic, from the architecture of the rooms, the futons, slippers, the typical dinner and breakfast, the bathroom with wooden hot tub, the yukatas...Be prepared for cold nights if you come in winter, as these houses are not especially heated to preserve the materiel they are made of.

First of all, if you are considering visiting Shirakawa-go or not: DO VISIT. Second, DO stay at a gassho-sukuri if your budget allows (do consider the fact that you get a very complete, high-quality dinner and breakfast, and that many people pay 300Y/p to enter other gassho-houses which makes no sense to pay since you are staying at one).

My only "complaint" is that I expected it to be a family house and interact with the owners as part of the experience: this was not the case (we didn't interact with anyone more that for check-in/out and being served meals). I was never promised otherwise so no points lost for this, but wanted to share it to explain the experience for future travelers.

Very welcoming and nice. Little English, but not needed. The accommodation requires a lot of sharing with your fellow travelers. Dinner, breakfast, bathroom, noises. But if you accept that, it is lovely

Wonderful stay! Really warm and welcoming host/owner, who goes above and beyond to ensure we have a nice stay. She doesn't speak English and would just speak to you in Japanese with a lot of gesture, but be adventurous and go out of your linguistic comfort zone, use gesture and mix English - Japanese wordings, and both parties would understand each other. We stayed in the cold days of February, and to our surprise, the house was really warm considering how old and traditional it is.

The room is tatami floor, and futon bedding will be laid out for you while you're having dinner in the common dining room. The common dining room even has the traditional sunken hearth (irori)! Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by pre-heated room, a low table with a big thermos of hot tea and wafer. The village has wifi (another surprise) which is very stable for usage in Nodaniya.

Dinner and breakfast are included in the room rate, which makes it a great value for money. And there's Hida beef in the dinner set menu, a lavish set menu at that!

Again, the house is really charming, as long as you're looking and expecting a stay in an old traditional house. No fancy shmancy and the toilet gets cold in the winter. Tips for winter, try and set your gas heater to longer hours before you hit the bed so it doesn't ring every 3 hrs and wake you up.

We came by car and it snowed overnight during our stay so our tiny little m***a Passo was burried in the snow. When we were leaving, without even bother asking about payment, oba-san (the host) was more concerned about getting us ready to leave and even helped us clearing the snow from on and around our car. We had a fun snow-cleaning session with oba-san! :D

Charming house, warm oba-san host, delicious meals!

Nice house, great food, good service. The toilet and bathroom are very clean. A bit far from bus terminal and onsen (15 mins walk) but it doesn't matter.

You can stay at a reasonable price in a traditional Japanese gassho-zukuri house. The food was simple, but it was delicious with local ingredients. The washroom and shower room are clean, the room is clean, and Wi-Fi is connected. Above all, the hostess's hospitality is wonderful, and we want to stay again.
