Natadera is set in a beautiful valley with cave lined cliffs. In fact, the main hall is set into the cliff. Since the Jomon era people have prayed here, the caves were compared to the wombs of mothers and considered to be places of Umarekiyomaru, the cycle of death, purification and rebirth. It's a beautiful place and well worth a visit.

I recommend to buy a special ticket while entering this place which is for 800 yens. But it's worth as it gives you access to the ravishing nature and caves around the temple area. The temple also has an observatory. If you are a fan of taking photos, you can even spend 6 to 7 hours at this place. The temples from inside are beautiful and you can see the gigantic idols over there. We also did Omikuji, which is finding your luck and it was interesting.

Stunning temple. Definitely a must visit when in the area!! Personally found the outside area more worth it then paying more to enter the building as well.

This place has historic and cultural artifacts filled in a large green space. There are various temples, bell tower, pagoda and ponds completely away from all the crowds of the other famous tourist destinations. This place offers a great escape from the hustle of the city and gives you a heavy dose of tranquility and peace.

Lovely grounds and gorgeous views, the mossy forest was so relaxing and the cliff temple was really cool to see.

Natadera is absolutely not to be missed. This is easily my favorite Temple in all of Ishikawa-ken (including the Kanazawa temples). It is serene and not overcrowded even in August the maples are turning red and orange and the main gate and temple are borderline perfect. This is a place you can see in 45 minutes but I recommend 3 hours of exploration. It has several trails and numerous photo opportunities. There are a variety of charms for sale and statues scattered around the grounds. Possibly most impressive of all is the Kannon which has 11 heads all making different facial expressions and many arms, each arm is carrying something or making a hand gesture. It's celebrating it's 1300th year of existence this year. (Keep in mind you cannot take pictures of the many headed Kannon)

Edit for November 9th 2018

Still the best Temple in Ishikawa Prefecture. Must see day trip if in Kanazawa or Komatsu or Kaga Onsen. New Autumn pictures posted today. Truly the most unique of the areas many offerings. Fourth visit and I will indeed return for a 5th.

Edit Again: Pictures from my better camera. Natadera how wonderful you are.

The great temple especially during autumn season, huge parking lots but can get full during weekend of peak autumn.

This place is extremely beautiful. So much history and completely out of the radar for most tourists means you can have it more or less to yourself if you time it correctly.

Enjoyed it more than any place in Kyoto.

It's a great place to visit in autumn. I think this temple is unique. A lot of temples look pretty much the same in Japan, but this temple has different view.

My favorite temple in all of Ishikawa prefecture. Autumn colors are at their prime in November and it remains cooler even during sunny hours of the day. Many trees provide cover and allow for some of the best green moss of any temple I have seen in nine visits to Japan. Even if you do not go in the fall it is still a five star experience with beautiful statues and a specific charm.
