Donopan

During the previous two weeks traveling in Japan, my wife and I ate plenty of ramen, soba, and sushi. We were craving veggies which seemed to be in short supply at all the restaurants we visited.

My wife and I discovered this magical place after seeing a few photos of its food posted online. We decided we just had to go!

Don’t be put off by the strange location. This little restaurant is in the middle of some rice fields, well off the main road. As you travel down the back road to get to this place you will wonder if you’ve taken a wrong turn, but you haven’t! The cute little building with its welcoming flags will appear shortly.

Upon opening the front door we met the owner, Miss Suzuki, who was extremely friendly and welcoming. In chatting with her, we learned that she makes her own bread, her own mustard, and even her own Portuguese massa de pimentau sauce, which is a 10-day long process! Miss Suzuki takes pride in the quality of her food, and you can tell from the moment the first dish arrives.

My wife and I both ordered the “Lunch Set with Homemade Bread and Local Fresh Vegetables”. Miss Suzuki had a much more poetic name for it in Japanese, so please forgive my English translation! The first dish arrived and both my wife and I were amazed with its beauty. All we could say was “Wow!” And the flavors were as amazing as the visual impression.

Mis Suzuki explained to us that she wanted to highlight local vegetables, and to make them the main inspiration for the meal. Mission accomplished! Eggplant in soybean sauce, tofu cheese caprese, homemade pickled red onions, a delicate deep-fried tofu, and some gorgeous ratatouille. Take a look at the photo. It was mind-bogglingly good! Yes, it tasted as good as it looks.

After this introduction to Miss Suzuki’s cooking, my wife and I couldn’t wait for what was next. We hadn’t yet tried the bread here, but the restaurant’s name has to word bread (pan) in it, so we knew their bread must be something special. The second plate arrived! Another beautiful display. The plate held a freshly made wheat gluten sandwich with Portuguese massa sauce in a soft homemade pillowy bun. Purple cabbage potage, a slice of her deliciously chewy twisted bread, and a delicate cabbage salad. Oh my god! We were in heaven. I can’t tell you which we liked more. They were all so good!

After this tour de force of cooking skill I really wanted to try one of Miss Suzuki’s deserts. She explained that her blackberry tart was “simple”, without cream filling. I think that “perfect” might have been a better word to describe it. Delicate and flaky, with bursts of blackberry. This tart was a definite winner!

My wife and I have traveled a lot, and we’ve been to a lot of restaurants. This restaurant – Donopan – deserves some serious recognition for the excellence and beauty of its food. We would have gladly paid more than double what they charged for this level of quality, flavor, and gorgeous presentation. Maybe triple would be the proper price. If this restaurant were in Tokyo, no doubt there would be a line around the block with a two hour wait.

So, if you’re in the Akita area and want some truly delicious food, where the focus is on vegetables and quality homemade bread, do yourself a favor and visit Donopan. You will not regret it. It might even be the best meal of your entire trip!

awesome cafe. we loved all the food we ordered. we tried the bread lunch set and the curry plate. i especially loved the veggie dish. the spinach soup alone made it worth walking half an hour to this cafe. the owner was very friendly and even gave us extra dish made of fresh forest vegetable she just receieved that day.

Look at the pictures. The food tastes even better than it looks!! The chef uses locally sourced ingredients and changes the menu often. My lunch would have been at least $50 in California and I would have been happy to pay because the quality of food is so good. Lunch cost less than $14us!!

Between the beautiful presentation, quality of the food, and wonderfully calm setting, I guarantee you will be satisfied with your meal no matter where you come from!!

野菜だけでこれだけの料理が出来るのか⁉って言うくらいどのお料理も美味しいです。
オーナーが1人でやっているので多少の待ち時間があるので、のんびり食事したい人は是非行ってください🙆

お料理のひとつひとつが丁寧に作られていて美味しかったです。オーナーさんとのお話も楽しくて、素敵な時間が過ごせました。店内の広さはこじんまりしていますが雰囲気とセンスが良く落ち着きました。
観光地の角館にありながら、他のお店と一線を画しているところに好感を持ちました。お弁当もお願いできるようなので、機会があれば食べてみたいです！

パンと野菜のおかずいろいろと本日のスープ1100円のランチいただきました。地元の食材を使ったとても落ち着く空間。ランチはこの他、カレー、おうどんのがあるみたいです。今は真農楽園さんのりんごを使ったスイーツもいただけるみたいです♪

ずっと気になっていたお店にやっと行くことができました

土曜日の11：30頃に予約せずにお邪魔しました
そのときは他のお客様は居なかったのですがお昼近くになると2組のお客様が・・・
小さくかわいらしいお店で店内もセンスよくまとまっています
かわいいオーナーさんお一人で頑張っているお店でした

いただいたお料理は『大地のめぐみパンランチ』・・
名前のとおり大地のめぐみが感じられどれもおいしくとっても大満足のランチでした。
特に手捏ねのパンがとってもおいしかったぁ～また是非行かせていただきます

ピザとパスタは小学校低学年、年中の子どもたちが大感激。大人は辛味の効いたカレーと豪華なランチセットで大満足。ガスパチョが特に美味しかったです。また、ぜひ伺いたいです。ありがとうございました。

こじんまりしているけど、くつろげる。とても手の込んだ有機野菜の料理に、心も満足。

素晴らしいランチコースで、大変満足して帰宅しました。
オーナーさんの気さくなお声掛けにも、妻と2人、気持ち良く、受け答えさせていただきました。また、オーナーさんに会いに行きたいと思います。

食前に出されたごぼう茶が香ばしい風味でとても美味しかったです！
注文した大豆アイスのパフェも程良いアイスのシャリシャリ感とまろやかな甘みがフルーツ、スフレチーズと合っていて大変美味でした

こじんまりとしたどちらかというと狭いお店ですが、かわいらしい空間で居心地は良かったです。
オーガニックにこだわっているようですがパンもカレーもとても美味しく、こういったお店にありがちな『何の感情も引き起こさない味』に陥っていないのは貴重な気もします。

何よりも店主のほんわかした人柄が魅力。料理にも空間にもその優しさが滲み出ているような、そんなお店。

辛いですが旨味があり、盛付も様々な具材がトッビングされていて食べていて楽しかった。
