Visited the Kyushu Ceramic Museum in Arita, Saga Prefecture, it is a treasure trove for ceramic enthusiasts. With its impressive permanent collection and frequent special events, the museum celebrates the historical, cultural, and artistic significance of ceramics created in Kyushu, particularly Saga and Nagasaki Prefectures. There is an interesting giant ceramic clock with four seasons and melodies every 30 minutes!
The displays are well-curated, informative, and even include English translations. Whether you're a pottery aficionado or simply curious about Japanese porcelain, this museum is a must-visit. Plus, the free entrance makes it even more appealing! 🏺🎨

Had a very nice time in this museum! It traces the development of Arita ceramics and the history of Japanese ceramics in general. Maybe a 10 minute walk from Arita Station but it is totally worth it! The museum was also free when we went there! But I would have been willing to pay for the exhibits there, some of which were also interactive. Would definitely recommend visiting!

It's a great place to be, with just 15 min. walking distance from the train station. It's a fantastic place to see ceramic and porcelain arts from the ancient times. The staffs are extremely friendly and you can even enjoy a cup of coffee in a cup made from the Edo period! With lots of free parking and free admission, it's a "must do" if you come to Arita.

The Kyushu Ceramic museum is a medium size museum where you can find a lot of pottery dated from the 16th century. It’s free to visit and staff is very friendly. You can spend from 1 hour to many hours depending how much you like pottery. Oh, and don’t forget to check the clock working and the toilets!

Definitely worth it, even if you’re not massively into pottery. The rooms are beautifully designed to be very immersive, there are some interactive displays as well. Everything was available to read in English besides Japanese.

This museum exhibits the ceremic ware from the entire Kyushu region and works by the ceremic artists.

The ceremic clock is super pretty and it moves every 30 mins!

Even though my family and I are not into ceremic art, but we are definitely impressed by every piece if work showcasing in the museum!

Loved the museum, very beautiful pottery with nice information. The permanent exhibition offered all of its information in both Japanese and English and the temporary exhibition offered some English information but mainly Japanese. It is a free museum.

I highly recommend this museum.
The museum itself is located on the top of a small hill over Arita and has some beautiful modern architecture. The collection of Arita ware is stunning and very diverse in terms of ages and styles, going from the very first decades of ceramic production in the region all the way to cutting edge contemporary pieces. The collection is well showcased and I appreciated the museography a lot. I learned about the history of Arita potteries and how they are made.
I went in the afternoon on a week day in June and there were very few visitors so it felt like I had all the collections to myself.
Also the museum is totally free.

Free admission for this beautiful Ceramic museum. Great displays and you can rent a device for an English audio tour. You also get to use a fancy, true porcelain throne to do your business. Win.

I enjoyed the museum a lot. I come from the ceramic area in Spain and for us, ceramic is in our DNA. The most lovely and amazing part was the children's area where they had a contest from young ages. Some of the pieces were really good for 7 years old kids.
On the other areas a local art can be shown with really big and detailed ceramic pottery. Also there's a nice clock with mechanical parts who moves and opens itself every half hour.

A picturesque museum at the top of a hill, the Kyushu Ceramic Museum offers 5 rooms of exhibits to learn about regional ceramic history. The first 3 rooms are paid entry, about 300 JPY for 1 adult. The other 2 are free, permanent exhibits. The museum surrounds a nice interior court with a garden. I recommend this for any aspiring artists and those interested in history.
