If you're interested in Late Antiquity, it's a must go! Original Ostrogothic building with unique architecture, designs, and history, unparalleled and unlike anything in Ravenna or the world.

Although the mausoleum is empty and had been stripped of it's internal decorations, the architecture, information plaques, and the surrounding park makes it well worth it. One if my favorites from Ravenna!

For history fans the place should not be missed.
The location is also full of charm.
Nothing special to see but full of atmosphere.
PROBLEM currently, in order to get there on foot (1.2 km from the station) you can't use the official route but you need to take an underground passage near the station.

Even though this mausoleum has no mosaics (almost de rigeur in Ravenna) it is a wonderful place. Built in AD520 to be the mausoleum for King Theodoric the Great, king of the Ostrogoths, it displays wonderful building techniques, not least in its dome, a single slab of stone, apparently weighing in at a cool 230 tonnes. The projections on the outside of the dome, which look like buttresses are in fact handles from which the dome was lifted into place!

The tomb building is amazing. To think of its age, its purpose, its legends and how it has stood for 1500 years, it is simply fantastic. The second floor chamber is the most impressive.

Magnificent tomb of a great ruler. It is hard to imagine how they managed to transport that 250 tonnes lab of Istrian marble so far away (some 400 km), but they did.

Unique Ostrogothic monument not fitting into any art style, heavy and gloomy, befitting ages it was created in. Of interest is that the roof is made of one solid slab of Istrian stone (Brijuni islands, Croatia), weighing 150 tons. How they managed to bring it here beats imagination.
Possible to get inside (which is really not very interesting), no queues to enter, but try to see it in the evening or night. Could not enter complex, but mausoleum is nicely lit and perfectly visible if you get to the exit (close to the ticket shop). Better experience as you will be perhaps the only people there.

Very interesting structure in a beautiful park. Definitely worth to visit.
But, somehow difficult to get to by foot of you walk on the wrong side of the bridge.
They should most certainly make it more clear for pedestrians how to get there from the train station

Seemingly space age design before its time. A truly unique monument in an evocative setting. Especially beautiful at sunset.

t’s the MAUSOLEUM OF THEODORIC, the most important burial monument built by the Ostrogoths in Italy, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ravenna. On the top of the mausoleum lies a large monolithic dome of remarkable dimensions, with no equals in all the antique and modern architectural heritage (10.76 m in diameter and 3.09 m in height), crowned by twelve curved handles with the names of eight Apostles and four Eavngelists. Don't miss it!

A surprise find. Set in a lovely park and not crowded in autumn. Magnificent building erected around 530AD. Upper storey not accessible to wheelchair users. Excellent tourist information office with a most helpful staff.

Beautiful, although not so interesting after seeing all the mosaics... I would recommend doing this before the mosaics. The entrance was free when I visited.

The Mausoleum of Theodoric is an ancient monument. It was built in 520 AD by Theodoric the Great, king of the Ostrogoths, as his future tomb.

Probably the most famous, preserved and well known mausoleum from late antiquity / early middle age. Notice the roof from a single piece of Istrian stone and porphyry sarcophagus.

It's really a one of a kind structure, no mosaics, but a place where you can feel the power and taste of ancient times.
