We chose to make this our first site, so took the train down from Ravenna station and then the bus back up to Ravenna. It's a bit out of the way but so worth the logistical trouble and time out of the busy tourist schedule (to whoever is still undecided)!

It is a hidden treasure and feels different from the other sites, a very authentic rural church with deep history rather than a tourist attraction. We went on a Saturday morning and were lucky because a wedding closed down the site half an hour later.

This church located outside of the city of ravenna about 20 minutes by public transportation or 10 minutes by car is a wonderful example of Byzantine art and architecture melded with romanesque art and architecture as well as later additions from the baroque and neoclassical periods.

Superb early Christian basilica, restrained and dignified in its timeless beauty. Essential part of history of art and human history in general. NOT to be missed when visiting Ravenna.

6th century Roman cathedral unbelievably large for such a small village. In the past, Classe used to be a bussling port. Accessible by bus from Ravenna and thankfully enjoyable in silence

Beautiful mosaics. A bit out of Ravenna but an easy bus ride. We took a cap one way for 10 Euro.

Impressive, original and a great sample of ceramic style church. Out of the center but worth it. Bus number 4, 40 and 176 from Ravenna have a stop in front. 5 Euros per person.

The Basilica of Saint Apollinaire is Classe is situated at a distance of eight kilometers from Ravenna. It was built in the 6th century to honor St Apolinaris who was one of the first bishops in Ravenna and died in this area.
In spite of the plundering it suffered over the centuries, the Basilica maintains the splendor and grandiosity of its original building and its decoration of mosaics is one of the most beautiful examples of Byzantine art.
It is absolutely worthy the trip from Ravenna

Though it can seem like a hike to get here, is worth it even after seeing Ravenna's many mosaics. The church itself also is noteworthy: compared to its counterparts be city, it's huge!
