Pretty little castle on the shore of Lake Garda. Not so much going on inside, but the views are spectacular. Lots of stairs!

Great view of the lake from the top. Be aware that There are some tricky stairs to climb up/ down from the very top. But otherwise cool experience. We didn't read too much of the history, but that's there if you enjoy getting into the history.

This lovely historic castle is very well maintained, and includes a museum, and modern sculptures (which are fantastic). You can walk round the various levels, and also climb the tower. The climb isn't too bad, as long as you are reasonably mobile.

PLEASE NOTE you need to keep your ticket with the QR to to exit, as well as enter the castle

Scaliger Castle of Malcesine is a captivating medieval fortress perched on the Veronese side of Lake Garda. Let me share some intriguing details about this historical gem:

Historical Overview:

The castle’s origins trace back to the last centuries of the first millennium B.C., although some sources suggest that the Lombards built it around the mid-first millennium A.D.

Destroyed by the Franks in 590 A.D., it was later rebuilt.

In 806, King Pepin visited the castle during his trip to Malcesine.

From 1277 to 1387, the Scaliger family controlled and renovated the fortress, earning it the name “Scaliger Castle.”

The House of Visconti occupied it from 1387 to 1403.

The Republic of Venice held sway from 1403 to 1506, followed by the Empire.

Ownership changed hands several times, including French and Austrian control.

Since 1866, it has been under Venetian ownership.

In 1902, the castle was declared a national monument.

Panoramic Views:

Beyond its cultural significance, the castle offers breathtaking vistas. From the Rivellino platform and the tower, visitors can savor a 360-degree panorama of Malcesine, etching memories that endure forever.

Exploring the Castle:

Casermetta: On the left as you enter, this housed the castle guard.

Natural History Museum: Located on the lower ground floor and ground floor, it underwent refurbishment in 2008. The museum now offers an interactive multimedia experience, engaging all five senses.

First Floor: Exhibits and wedding ceremonies take place here.

Goethe Room: Once an Austrian gunpowder magazine, it now displays sketches of the lake and castle drawn by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe during his Italian Journey.

Balcony: At 24 meters high, it provides a stunning view of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Garden: Here, you’ll find Goethe’s bust, inviting contemplation.

If you ever find yourself near Lake Garda, don’t miss the chance to explore this enchanting castle! 🏰🌟

Real value for money at only 6 euros per entry, or 5 for those aged over 65 or under 16. Young children under 5 enter for free. Once inside, there is lots to see and do. As well as exploring the castle, there are also numerous sculptures located around the grounds. Most of these have been made from recycled rubbish. The tower is a difficult climb, but once at the top, the views of Malcesine and Lake Garda are spectacular. There are many steps here, so I wouldn't recommend it for those with mobile disabilities. The staff are few and far between. Except for several members at the entrance, there were none within the castle itself. There is no shop or cafe here either, but there are toilets located next to the castle exit. Nevertheless , a very e joyable experience.

The old Castello Scaligero. A citadel rising above the lake shore on a jagged cliff. The ancient citadel is a must visit, enter it and experience the medieval history of northern Italy. It goes without saying that the citadel offers a spectacular panoramic view of the lake, as well as of the high ridges that surround the town from all other directions

If you happen to be in Malcesine, this is a must! Breathtaking view, interactive expositions and the history of the castle (and the city in general) is nicely explained! If you want to go up to the tower, be aware that there are quite some steep staircases! But beside that, i can’t stress enough how pretty it was!

If there is one historis place that you must visit while in Malcesine, this is the castle. Majectic structure perched on a rocky hill offering magnificent views in all directions (that is if you brave the stairs of the tower). Very well maintained and featuring a number of permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Beautiful place to visit. The 360 degree view is stunning. The way up the tower might not be feasible for everyone, but I would give it a try - it’s worth it. And a word of warning:
Don’t stand too close to the bell. I thought my eardrum might break when it suddenly started to ring.

Excellent castle in the heart of the town. Very reasonably priced to get in (€6 per adult). Lots of exhibits which have English translations including the history of the lake and castle and the wildlife of the lake. If you have the energy you can climb the bell tower and the views are spectacular from up there. Overall essential visiting if you are in the town!

Wonderful spot, a mix between history and science… glad to learn about the castle as much as about the lake, its history and the natures around the area. Great view points too!

Beautiful castle in a beautiful location, the winding streets lead up to this medieval castle with style, shops, restaurants and bars. It sits upon an outcrop on Lake Garda with majesty. Claiming spectacular views it's a tourist destination that can't be rushed, it comes with a fairly expensive entry fee if you don't have the time. The better experience is to go swimming at the base of it, no crowds or interrupted views. A must see if you get time.
