Monumental Cemetery Reviews

I stumbled upon this cemetery on my way to go shopping and I'm so glad I stopped. It's the most beautiful cemetery I've ever seen (though keep in mind, I'm American so the cemeteries I'm used to are not that impressive) and it's hard to express just how large the property is. There are so many beautiful monuments that it would take hours to see them all.

It's very peaceful in the cemetery, so this is the perfect place to visit if you want to look at art and get away from the crowds. I found this description on one of the maps:

"The scultures and buildings of the Monumental Cemetery allow us to experience the major events of the city's past, its artistic journey from realism and eclecticism of the late 19th century, through to art nouveau and symbolism of the early 20th century, and then on to the contemporary age, as if it were a real open air museum featuring all the major Italian artists."

Hidden gem in Milan, and a must-visit. Highly recommend, especially since it's free!

Impressive to see how cemetery can be full of art and if I may say 'life'. I didn't expect to like it but it was very artistic and expressive. Very unique place and a must visit when in Milan.

Unbelievable atmosphere, calmness and countless works of art that made my chin drop. If you are planning a trip to Milan, skip one shopping mall and devote at least two hours to this place.

Truly magnificent place. The resting place of numerous famous people, and home to an incredible collection of unique sculptures. The Jewish section is particularly beautiful, and underappreciated.

Be quiet and considerate when visiting. This is not a playground, please show the appropriate respect.

Second most beautiful cemetery complex in Italy. Unbelievable sculptures, size and atmosphere. Speechless it’s an art museum more than cemetery. Multiple wonderful stones , what a beautiful resting place.

One of the most interesting and mesmerising places I’ve ever been to. A fascinating and srtiking place full of scuptures on top of tombs of important figures in Italian history. Each of them present pain, grief, sorrow, fear, love, sadness, mistery in its own way. We visited during the day, can’t even imagine being in here in the dark. This is a basically an open-air-museum with free entrance (didn’t get guided tour etc) which is a must-see in Milan. I would consider visiting again if I go to Milan again.

A truly wonderful place that is 30 minutes north of Duomo Cathedral and is a pleasant escape from the busy city centre.

Filled with stunning religious tombs, monuments and mausoleums, you can spend hours walking through the cemetery. I really recommend this place if you are visiting Milan and remember to bring water when the weather is hot.

Plenty of shaded areas too which is nice.

A different type of tourism haha. The place is so nice to visit, it is a open museum and a good to way to make people’s memories alive. Sometimes you feel like you are in a little city, almost like a condo, where people dispute who created the best building. You can spend hours and hours there, it got me surprised and amazed how death can be interpreted in tombs.

Visited this site September 2022. Visited the cemetery only after a fantastic tour--English Free Tour Milan sponsored by CITYWALKERS--with Marco, who brought this to our tour group's attention. His recommendation was, "If you really like architecture and sculpture...." and I knew I was adding a visit to my priorities.

I spent the entire afternoon walking around, up and down rows and rows of mausoleums and monuments that were utterly stunning and beautiful. One can run around and test one's own knowledge of architectural periods, from Classical to Byzantine to Gothic to Baroque, etc.

I highly recommend a visit for lovers of sculpture and architecture geeks. Make a visit to Cimitero Monumentale as high a priority as a visit to the Duomo.

Single-handedly the best cemetery I’ve been to in the world. Unique statues, huge tombs, photos on the gravestones in Italian tradition. Everything feels colossal!

The Monumental Cemetery in Milan is like an open air museum. The art with which the mausoleums and the sculptures that accompany them were built is soothed by their beauty. I visited this cemetery one summer day. The cemetery closed at 17.00, but I had not read the program at the entrance, so the sun was still high in the sky, I did not realize that I could be closed there. But the program was a program and had to be respected and probably no one detected my presence there, so I remained locked between the graves. Of course, I managed to jump the fence and leave, but I had already made a plan how to stay there.

The cemetery is very spacious and contains the resting places of important figures. Each grave area has its own unique gallery of sculptures, both big and small, that create a truly remarkable visual experience. I had the opportunity to visit on a rainy morning, and the combination of the wet soil scent and the atmosphere of death provided an unforgettable experience. Some of the sculptures are truly astonishing and leave a lasting impression.
Additional information: I went there two days in a row searching for the ashes of Umberto Eco. Unfortunately, although his ashes were cremated, there is no monument dedicated to him, so visitors cannot see his ashes. I asked the security and other visitors all day, but unfortunately, nobody seemed to be aware. If you don't know the exact location, it can be quite difficult to find a name among dozens of other monuments.

Beautiful graveyard. It is absolutely not seedy like a common graveyard.
Graves are impressive, as they are enormous

I liked it very much. I never imagined that in a cemetery I would be able to admire so many works of art. Such a soothing place, huge and full of history, is worth a visit. There is even a map for visiting the famous tombs.
