After finding the Buddhist Monastery Ruins in Vadnagar, it has been established that this region was once thriving as important Buddhist center.

The excavated structures resemble Buddhist monastic cells. This was mentioned in the written accounts of Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang. As per this account, there were ten Buddhist monasteries flourishing in Anandpura, which is known as Vadnagar in present time.

The structure as a whole is a big square complex with verandah and cells. These are believed to be built in three different phases in the history. These complexes have water management systems for utilization of canals.

4000 antiquities have been discovered during the excavation. The stupas, a large number of Mediterranean pottery like amphora and 1200 silver and copper coins from different ages have been found here.

The artifacts found suggest that Vadnagar was connected to the famous Silk Route for cross-border trade. The arrangement of the cells around the central courtyard creates swastika like pattern.

However, for the layman it looks like damaged brick house and not a very important historical place or thriving international trading market. Curious tourists have started visiting this place.

It is believed that Vadnagar was much bigger and densely populated during the medieval period than it is now. One must visit this place when they are around here.

This is the place visited by Huen- tsang whose travelogues have been one of the source of our rich history.
Well preserved foundations of the chaitya is the highlight and may other artefacts recovered from this site are being preserved in the acheological museum nearby( under construction as on day)
The city of vadnagar is thus an ancient city with rich buddhist tradition.

A rare treat for archeology nerds. You can look down upon Buddhist ruins from 675 CE.
A few complaints: there's poor ventilation and no fans for the workers, there's no signage... finding this place was difficult. While in town also check out the Kirti Toram and Taranga caves

Buddhist Monastery belonging to the 2nd-7th century AD, within the fortified area of Vadnagar. The monastery had two votive stupas and an open central courtyard around which initially nine cells were constructed. The arrangement of cells around the central courtyard creates a swastika-like pattern.
