A perfume merchant named Athar, who migrated from Tirunelveli, built the structure. It took 44 years to complete, with construction beginning in 1860 and finishing in 1904.
The structure is made up of limestone and mortar and polished with egg white. The facade is covered with cusped arches surrounding the open courtyard, where the prayer halls stand. There is a covered ablution pond in the south-eastern corner and a small library on the eastern side. There's also a kitchen that prepares nonbu kanji (rice soup), in the fasting period during Ramadan. Hawkers line the entrance with amulets and items of worship.
According to the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), the two minars, with domed roofs, on the northern and southern sides, are 85 feet high. This pair of silver domes stands out in the skyline of Town Hall area. They were crafted with wrought-iron hide behind cluttered cables lining Oppanakara Street. The gates tower up to the stained glass and four minarets above. The mosque can accommodate about 2,000 worshippers during Friday prayers.

Perfume merchants named Athar who migrated from Tirunelveli, built this monumental structure. It took 44 years for completion. According to the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), the two minars, with domed roofs, on the northern and southern sides, are 85 feet high. This pair of silver domes stands out in the skyline of Town Hall area. In better climes they could well have been the gates of heaven (also called as Jannah). These had crafted with wrought-iron hide behind cluttered cables lining Oppanakara Street. The gates tower up to the stained glass and four minarets above. The mosque with a capacity of accommodating about 2000 worshippers for the Friday prayers. A Sufi dargah belonging to a Pir Hazrat Jamesha Waliullah is in close proximity to the mosque.

The mosque was constructed by perfume merchants from Tirunelveli, who had settled down in Coimbatore. The construction of the mosque began in 1860 C.E and was finished in 1904 C.E.This is the oldest and biggest mosque in the city.On the northern and southern sides of the mosque are two 85 feet high minarets, with domed roofs. The dargah of Hazrat Jamesha Waliullah(d.1850 C.E), a preacher is on the southern side of the masjid.
On Thursday evenings -at the time of Magrib prayers, numerous Hindus can be seen visiting the mosque with their ailing children to seek the blessings of the Imam (prayer leader).
Edgar Thurston in his book'Omens and Superstitions of Southern India'(1912)states:"It is believed that the sight or breath of Muhammadan just after prayers at a mosque will do good to children suffering from various disorders. For this purpose, women carry or take their children and post themselves at the entrance to a mosque at the time when worshippers leave it.Most of them Hindus, but sometimes Eurasians may be seen there."
