The extensive mansion of a Jain family that achieved high influence under both the nawabs and the British, the House of Jagat Seth is home to an eclectic assortment of valuables from the 18th to 20th centuries.
The Jagat Seth family was a wealthy merchant, banker and money lender family from Murshidabad. The House of Jagat Seth is an interesting place to visit in Murshidabad. It has a secret tunnel, an underground arms museum and a temple. Local guides are available who will provide ample information about the history of the family

When you hear about it, you wonder why visit a house? But when you do, you realize the value of a peek into the lifestyles & assets of the rich folks of yesteryears! Truly worth a visit.

A place with great historical significance, and home to one of the richest people of the ancient world. Much like the fate of its occupants, the house has been reduced to a relic into a glorious past, now lost in the musty pages of history.

Everyone is well aware about the history of Jagat Seth. But as claimed by the local people and guides this is not actually the home of Jagat Seth at Siraj's time. The place is very very well maintained almost as newly constructed and the environment is also quite good.

It can be a good weekend destination or day trip destination from Kolkata. The ticket counter is outside the house. There is a museum inside the house. The place is very photogenic.

It’s really a good place to visit. Good collections of historical stuffs and highly recommended is the coffee and tea in the stall inside the premises. The owner of the stall is a gem of a person.

This is great place to visit while your trip to Murshidabaad.
The place is very clean and well maintained. You can also bring your kids.
However this is not the actual house of Jagat Seth, claimed by guide and local people. There is a mesuem inside the house. You can get to know so many things related to the time of Jagat Seth. Though you may find guides standing outside the gate inside the house. But it is not necessary to take one. Everything that is allowed to visit and see, you can cover it on your own.😄.

You can get toto from Murshidabaad station or outside Hazaduari Palace.
Do visit this place. Happy time :)

Quite well maintained - Photography restricted inside the museum. Artifacts will definitely amaze you. Outside the museum, there is a large area to take beautiful pictures.

The house was founded by Jain Hiranand Shah from Nagaur, Rajasthan, who came to Patna in 1652. In 1707, Manikchand helped Prince Farrukhsiyar financially to become the Mughal Emperor. In award, Farrukhsiyar conferred the title of Jagat Seth on Manik Chand, the head of the family, meaning "banker or merchant of the world". This indicates the favour the family had gained at the Mughal court. Roben Orme, the official historian of the British East India Company described Jagat Seth as the greatest banker and money changer known in the world at that time. The historian Ghulam Hussain Khan believed that "their wealth was such that there is no mentioning it without seeming to exaggerate and to deal in extravagant fables". They built up their business towards the last quarter of the 17th century and by the 18th century, it was perhaps the largest banking house in the country. In the 1750s, their entire wealth was estimated to be 14 crores. Jagat Seth was extremely influential in financial matters in Bengal and had a monopoly of minting coins there. The Nawabs of Bengal such as Murshid Quli Khan used the credit networks of the Jagat Seth family to pay annual tribute to the Mughal Emperors in Delhi. Alivardi Khan came to the throne of Bengal in a military coup financed and planned by the Jagat Seths. According to William Dalrymple, they could "make or break anyone in Bengal, including the ruler, and their political instincts were sharp as their financial ones". Once a local businessman named Kantu borrowed money from Jagat Seth Fateh Chand and was interested in the purchase of silk. However, he failed to return the money.
