Hijli Detention Camp (now called Shaheed Bhavan, IIT Kharagpur), is a former detention camp operated during the period of British colonial rule in India. Located in Hijli, beside Kharagpur, (a part of former Hijli Kingdom) in the district of Midnapore West, West Bengal, India, it played a significant role in the Indian independence movement of the 19th and 20th centuries. The large numbers of those who participated in armed struggles or the non-cooperation movement against the British could not be accommodated in ordinary jails. The British colonial government decided to establish a few detention camps; the first one was located in Buxa Fort followed by the creation of Hijli Detention Camp in 1930. A significant moment in the Indian independence movement occurred at here in 1931 when two unarmed detainees, Santosh Kumar Mitra and Tarakeswar Sengupta, were shot dead by the Indian Imperial Police. Subhas Chandra Bose came to Hijli to collect their bodies for interment. Many Indian nationalists, including Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, voiced strong protests against the British Raj over this incident. The firing which later known as "Hijli firing" is the only incident of police firing inside a detention camp.
The detention camp was closed in 1937 and was reopened in 1940. In 1942 it was closed for the final time and the detainees were transferred elsewhere. During the Second World War it was occupied by the US Air Force.
Today, the camp is also known for being the birthplace of Indian Institute of Technology - Kharagpur, which started in 1951.In 1990, a part of the former detention camp buildings were converted to house the Nehru Museum of Science and Technology.

The best ever historic museum in Kharagpur. it not only contains heritage things but the most fascinating thing here is the jail in which our great freedom fighters were held back forcefully by the cruel british Govt.

The science related displays are in the style of BITM and Science City. The main attraction is the building, the grounds and the short film giving you the history of the place.

It is one of the best museum according to my opinion. It contains good science related things and anyone can gain practical knowledge by the materials here. It is situated inside the IIT Kharagpur campus and at the old building near the last end of the academic campus. you will get some important and good experimental set ups of basic things in science.
The museum is very well organized. There is Hijli jail near this museum. there are two sessions in the morning and evening session during which the museum remains open.

What a pleasant place! Visiting this place is like going back in history. Even though it was a detention camp, it was only because of the vision of Nehru ji that this place spawned into a giant campus we know as IIT Kgp today, the mother of all IITs. The museum is brilliant, certainly a thousand times better than even the govt run science museums I've seen till date. Kgpians are lucky to be living in a campus of such scientific and historical importance. A must visit for every student and their parents who come here. I was lucky enough to visit the Kgp campus in this lifetime.

I went to this place on mar, 2018 while I'm attending the INAE conclave. This place is awesome and there is lots of things to see here. Especially inside the IIT KGP, it takes about 3 complete days to vist entire places. The central library is one of the good place to visit. This Nehru museum has an iconic building structure and it has some good stories with our freedom fighters.
If you have a free time means, i suggest you to vist this place.

You can see the implementation of all the physics equations and mathematical calculations are also described so beautifully. One who is interested in knowing the history of computers, water and air transports plus the railways, this place is a must visit for you.
Science students should also go there and experience the science concepts.

There is so much to explore. So many scientific instruments, working models on which u can perform experiments... Everyone should visit it once, because acquiring knowledge and experiencing are different things... And experience by experiments is unmatchable..
