As per name Chaubis (24) Khamba ( mean pillers ) its a temple where 2 small temples located at entrance of the temple ( Mata temple ) and the whole premises stands on 24 pillers.This is a very beautiful Devi temple just near Sri Mahakaleshwar temple . Very nice ambience and good devotion on display

It is a rarest of rare temple of Sakthi incarnations here in the this ancient temple of 24 pillars, we can see the deities Shri Maha Laya matha and Shri Maha Maya matha, according to the history of the Ujjaini empire .. The Emperor Sri Vimkramadhitya used to worship these two incarnations of Sri Shakthi daily before entering this capital city, and people believe that these two deities converse with the emperor directly and give suggestions to run the kingdom.

And History says even today the Ujjaini district Administration perform Dassara festival in the name emperor Shri Vikramadhitya

In this temple they try to cure disease like typhoid , jaundice etc with the help of some locally made medicine which I think is an ayurvedic herb.

In olden times, Mahakaleshwar temple was located in closed enclosure called Mahakalavana.. Chaubis Khamba was one of the four main entrance gates to this Mahakalavana. This two storied entrance supported by carved pillars on both sides was built during the Paramara period (11-12 CE) when the capital was shifted from Malwa to Ujjain. Remains of the old boundary wall can be seen nearby. Near the Northern side of the entrance are two small temples dedicated to Mahalaya and Mahamaya goddess.
