Poruvazhi malanada temple, is famous temple located in a hilltop and with lush greenery view.
It's known as temple of Duryodhana (the eldest of kaurava), and is the only temple of Duryodhana.
They serve kerala toddy (Desi liquor) as their offerings to God.
They also perform rituals like Bali, padukka etc.
Malanada temple is very famous for its Malanada malakuda festival.
If you calmness and peace and need to know about kerala temples then it's a must visit place.

One of the famous temple, which is taken care by a community. The main idol is of Duriyodana and is served with toddy, betal, tobacco, etc which is available to buy near the counter. There are several other nearby temples associated with the same, which are opened only on special occasions. Overall a beautiful, quiet place where you can really get motivation and blessings.

I recently visited Malanads temple and had an incredible experience. From the moment I stepped inside, I felt welcomed and at peace.

The temple was clean and well-maintained, and I felt a deep connection to the divine.

I also appreciated the range of programs and services offered by the temple, catering to people of all ages and backgrounds. The temple has a strong sense of community, and I felt uplifted by the positive energy and goodwill of those in attendance.

Overall, I highly recommend Malanada temple to anyone seeking a spiritual experience. Thank you to the staff and volunteers for their hard work and dedication in maintaining such a wonderful place of worship.

Duryodhana, considered a villain in the Indian epic Mahabharata, is the mythical figure worshipped in this Temple, which also stands out for the absence of an idol or a sanctum sanctorum.

Annually in March, the Temple premises come to life during its vibrant temple festival, the highlight of which is the spectacular Malanada Kettukazcha event. Also known by the name Poruvizhi Peruviruthi Malanada Malakkuda Utsavam, up to 70 to 80 ft. tall and exquisitely designed structures called Edupu Kala and Edupu Kuthira are seen leading massive processions, with traditional percussion instruments providing the perfect accompanying orchestra. Large crowds gather to either carry the structures on their shoulders or see them placed on gigantic chariots, in a show revelry that matches just about any across God’s Own Country. Cultural programs run throughout the night, with Kathakali based on the story ‘Nizhalkuthu’ being among the highlights of the entire event.

Poruvazhi Peruviruthy Malanada
The only Duryodhana Temple in south India.
Here Duryodhana is addressed as 'Malaappooppan'. Kallu (toddy), Adukk (tobacco), Pattu (silk) are the main offerings by devotees for malaappooppan's blessing.

Fridays are special here, where people come from different parts of the state seeking his blessing.

The temple has no timing in specific and the rituals are not performed by the brahmin community. No specificity in timing depicts that anyone can come to Appuppan at anytime seeking help.

Here Duryodhana, the antihero, becomes the sole protector of the village and his kids shielding them from hardships and bad luck.

A scenic place on top of a hill with a fascinating feel and vibe. The temple is dedicated to Duryodhana and does not have a set prathishta, just a stone platform, but with it's own specific vibration and presence! There are rituals with animals and birds included and a fleet of stone stairs leads to an even more older temple with ancestral prathishtas. The teme.os famous for its effects and prasadams which is entirely of a different creed. The prasadams are toddy and meat.

Its the only Dhuryodhana Temple in Kerala. Temple is not that big inside as seen from the front. Only the front is hugely built. But the ambience cannot be described through word. Its soo beautiful. You can spent lots of time their not knowing the time passes by. Behind the temple beautiful fields which enhances the beauty of the place. This give it a great ambience. The main offerings is toddy, hen, goat etc. Near to the temple their is a kottaram(palace) which the people say Dhuryodhana first visited before coming to the place where temple is situated.

Calm and beautiful atmosphere. The temple is situated on top of a hill. You will get one of the best picturesque views of the village and the paddy fields while looking down from the temple. It has some worshipping methods that are entirely different from most of the temples that I have visited.

The time I visited was 'off season', so there wasn't much crowd. Rather than a pilgrimage place, the place is very well blesses with scenic and natural beauty. There are other sub-temples other than the main temple situated on a small hill. A great place to visit with your family.

The well known Malanada Temple (Poruvazhy Peruviruthy Malanada ) is the only Duryodhana Temple in South India.
It is located at Edakkad Kara (East side of chakkuvally-kollam). Unlike other temples, there is no Sreekovil and deity. In the absence of an idol, devotees submit themselves to a divine power through a mental process of ‘Sankalpam’ (Imagination).
We could see only a raised Mandapam in the top of hill (The meaning of Malanada is 'Top of the hill').
Down the hill on the south and west we see vast low lying paddy fields and on the east and north inhabited agricultural land.

The annual festival at Malanada is known as ‘Malakkuda’. It is celebrated during the summer, during the second half of March ( The second Friday of the Malayalam month ‘Meenam’) every year - an interval. The arrival of the festival is proclaimed by ‘Kodiyettu’ (the temple flag hoisting cerimony) on the first Friday of Meenam. Presently, although there is festivity for 8 days from Kodiyettu to Malakkuda, there is no change in the rituals connected therewith.

As mentioned elsewhere in the write up the pooja and other rituals at ‘Malanada’ are performed by members of the ’Malanada mooppan' community following a system that is influenced mostly by the Dravidian culture.
Toddy, arrack, sacrificing live chickens etc. are the favourite offerings to ‘Appooppan’. Toddy, being the most favoured offering, is being continued and it is given as ‘Theertha’ to devotees after pooja.
Toddy, live chickens, adukku ’Murukkan’), live goat, bullock, ‘Theevetty’, ‘Karuppu Katcha’, silk (red), flag, sword, ‘Muthukkuda’, ‘Aal-roopangal’, ‘Gada’, ‘Olakkuda’, ‘Udayaada’, ‘Pidipanam’, ‘Nerchakala’, ‘Nerchakuthira’, ‘Swarna nool’, ‘Karippukatti’, etc., are things normally offered to ‘Appooppan’. The system bears close allegiance to nature, agriculture, war, celebrations etc..
After harvesting, the agricultural produce like underground stems, banana, plantain, etc., bak ed in fire are being offered to ‘Devan’ which is known as ‘Chuttupooja’.

Good atmosphere and nature friendly temple.

Poruvazhy Peruviruthy Malanada, popularly known as Peruviruthy Malanada or Malanada is the only Duryodhana Temple in South India. It is located at Edakkad Ward (Kara) of Poruvazhy village in Kunnathoor Taluk of Kollam district (Kerala State), India. This place is the northern border of Kollam district which Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts share the boundaries. The temple is located equidistant from Adoor (M C Road) to the Northeast and Sasthamcottah to the Southeast. It is believed that the ‘Sankalpa Moorthy ‘at Malanada is ‘Duryodhanan’, the Great Epic Hero of Mahabharatham. The concept is unique in Indian history in as much as ‘Duryodhanan’, the Kaurava King known for his ‘Thamoguna’ driven thoughts and actions, being adored as the principal deity in a temple.
