Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary

Must visit places in andhra pradesh...Land for beautiful flamingos which are fled from arctic and Antarctic regions, Russia etc in search of food...
Rlad Access to the sanctuary is good...Open for public from Oct to Apr (all days...No holiday.)...December and January good time to visit......Binoculars available for rent of 50rs...Flamingo festival is organized by the govt every year in January....Child friendly play area is present...Deer park also there. Worth visit...Lot of parking space is there...

It’s a nice place for bird watching, a protected and developed place with necessary amenities for visitors. It has Watch towers too at vantage points. It’s mainly nesting site of Asian open bills along with spot billed pelicans. We can also see few spoon bills too. Many birds are migrants. It’s nice place to visit in winter as there are many birds with their chicks. It will open only after 8:00am and it needs to changed if possible as many other small birds will not seen after 8:00 am.

Wonderful place for bird photography. Unlike most of the bird sanctuary this was very calm with less crowd and a lot of diversity in flora. Liked visiting the place.

Very close to highway. Lots of birds at this time (December third week) and no crowds. Clean and calm. The paddy fields on the other side are very beautiful too.

Before visiting this place, visit Pulicat Bird Sanctuary early in the morning. ( read my review on Pulicat Bird Sanctuary).

This santuary is approx 30 min drive from Pulicat. It opens at 8 AM and pulicat is an open sanctuary, make sure to visit Pulicat before sunrise and capture the beautiful sunrise pics there.

Now in this sanctuary,

Entry fee is Rs.10 per person
Vehicle-Rs.100
Camera-Rs.100 each.
For foreign tourist, the price is double or something.

What you will see here is
Two species of pelicans-spoon billed and spot bellied. Two or three varities of stork, ibis, some ducks. This is the Breeding Ground for these birds. You can see them make their nest on the trees.
Remember, these birds are with their babies. So dont try to get adventures and cross the fencing. Consequences could be bad with those big, hard beaks hitting you.
Camera gear you should use-a good 400mm lens atleast.you can get close shots of birds with their babies.

Best time to visit is between 1st December to 31st December. You can see small babies of birds.

PS. Flemongoes do not come here.

And CARRY FOOD TO EAT. THERE ARE NO GOOD RESTAURENTS NEARBY.

Nellapattu is better place for Photographers and Birdwatchers to watch the migratory birds in the season time. good place for family picnic. Better to visit in January. Nature lovers will be enjoyed much more. for better experience carry binoculars

It is very peaceful to watch the birds there with their sounds. My baby enjoyed a lot…still imitates how birds were flying there and it’s sounds 😄

Great place to visit.... You can see lots of seasonal migratory birds...

Nelapattu is very closer to the National highway. Very easy to found from the highway. This is located in Nellore district. Approximately 100km's away from Chennai & 70km's away from Nellore.

I was staying near Nelapattu since from 6 years.
But I have visited inside bird sanctuary first time.
Felt very happy after seeing the calm and peaceful climate with the sounds of birds.

Total 4 view points are there which includes 1 watch tank.
Watch tank is the last view point to visit. From the watch tank you can feel the smell of nature.

Will recommend everyone to visit one time inside bird sanctuary whose ever is staying near Nelapattu.

Drinking water taps available.

Very much close the highway towards Nellore. Under then nalpattu flyover right and immediate left another 2 km you will reach destination. Take token for you car and dive inside as you me tired while returning. Agh the car park inside still got to walk another 1-2 kms to see the cluster of birds everywhere. Beautiful place. Maintenance good too. Reasons ticket prices.

It's a Good Place to visit with family, mostly in the Month of January and February only we can see the Bird's here which was migrate from Europe. Very Interesting Place for relax.

Highly recommended for the bird watchers and a perfect weekend getaway with family! A big shoutout to the Andhra Pradesh Government for neatly maintaining this area!

good place for chill with familys..but rite to visit is december. to feb

A very well maintained sanctuary - neat and clean, well laid pathways, there are staffs (tourist guides) roaming inside, carrying binoculars for viewing (Olympus make, very good visibility/lens); these services are free, you don't need to shell anything additional for this. We ended up spending around an hr

Best part - these guides know their stuff; i don't recollect the name of guide who helped us (my bad 😔), he's been here since 7yrs; he mentioned that park is open btn Oct/Nov till Apr. Best time to visit are Nov and Jan end.

Entrance fee was also nominal - 10/20 for adults, 5/10 for kids, car parking was Rs 100/- 😩

Only challenge faced was locating this place, there were many name boards on the highway however none had directions; even the google map pointed to a wrong place. Infact i missed the place and went few kms ahead and dropped the plan, had taken a u-turn since my son insisted (to visit).

Landmark is to take left after the cutting for dorari chatram railway station; there's a bridge once you cross the cutting for this railway station, the left I've referred above is just parallel to the bridge (hence u need to skip the bridge).

The place was lovely to see especially during Flamingo Festival. The lake there was fully filled with many species of flamingos. It is a must visit place in the Festival time.

Nelapattu Bird sanctuary has a large density of birds with nearly 88 types of avian species it planned with aminities like educational centre,deer parks , parking etc
This has some eco friendly huts in the core area of lake

Nelapattu bird sanctuary located in nellore district , andhrapradesh is a lovely place to watch nearly 150 different type of birds , among which famous for PELICON birds.. calm and peaceful sourroundings amidst of paddy fields will give you pleasant feel.. must watch from December to february time.. boating is not allowed.. no proper restaurants near by too..

Good to watch open bill storks and white headed ibis up close (20~25meters away) with chicks and juveniles nesting in comparison to vedanthangal, especially, the first view point, from entrance is closer.

Others birds include pelicans, cormorants, egrets, crows, myna, red whiskered bulbul, glossy ibis, spoon bills, common coot, barbers, Asian koel, white beeasted water hen, Prinia, little grebe, wagtails, ~ in their order of population.

Photographers: early morning sun may be ideal with front lit nest sites along the walk way and watch towers.

Seasonal: Late December - Early January are best.
