Pulicat bird sanctuary is the best place to visit for birds like flamingos and Guls during the migrant season, (Dec to May)
Very good birding guide and especially helps in getting good Flamingo sightings. Also has good knowledge about the area

2nd largest salt lake in India...Ride through road in the middle of lake is awesome...This road connects sulllurpet and SHAR...Lake is famous for flamingo birds which fled from arctic, Russian etc in search of food ...Dec, Jan are peak season for these birds.....please don't throw plastic and save birds...

Couldn't find the Greater Flamingos as on 4th December, 2022. The road is good and the government is arranging view points at multiple locations.
Lots of Painted Storks, few Spot billed Pelicans and lots of Seagulls were sighted.

As usual, lots of plastic. Poor birds. We are not educated enough to understand about protecting the habitat of other living entities.

It’s an awesome place to visit for migratory birds, and the best time is from December to February. Lot of migratory avian’s visit this beautiful place, have covered only a part of it though and in low tide one can see huge flocks of greater flamingo’s on either side of the road itself. It’s really a beautiful sight to watch. One needs to to have proper transport and good binoculars for seeing and enjoying these species. It’s a paradise for bird watching and photography if you have the required gear with you.

Awesome and cool place to visit.when I visited huge rainy but enjoyed a lot. Bike rides was awesome. Water level is very less and can’t go to water due to muddy. Less 🦅 🐦 birds I saw. Full of lake and in middle road view is awesome. Photo look 👀 is good.

As biker, I visit this place every year between November to January. This is when there is enough water, fishes and lot of migratory birds like storks, pelicans and the most beautiful flamingos come. It's a lovely sight!

100 kms from Chennai. Roads are good. Enter the town of Sullurpetta and head towards Sriharikota island. You can see rocket launches also from here.

2nd largest brackish water eco system in India. The stretch from town to island is around 10 kms. Water on both sides. There are view points. You can see birds from here. No shops in this stretch. Take food and water. End of the road is Satish Dhawan Space Center. I think there is toilet and one canteen here. Nothing fancy.

P.S - Carry binoculars if possible.

One unique place for all the Madras people to visit and love nature... An ocean followed by a lake. And too many islands that we a tourist gets to visit while this is the place suitable for study of birds. There are way too many birds species that could be seen here travelling from others countries to this place to breed here.

This place has awesome scenic views and when I visited in December there were a lot of birds. But a few things need to be clarified first. Google map shows this place as a bird sanctuary but this place is completely open not like any other sanctuary you will see. And there is no entry point here, so the exact location which shows that this is Pulicat Bird Sanctuary isn’t completely true. That’s why unlike any other bird sanctuary there isn’t any entrance fee. You can find the flock of birds on the side of the road which is going to Shriharikota from Sullurupetta. There are a few watch towers on the roads, but frankly speaking you may not get benefit from most of the watch towers as the flock of birds generally is at a distance from the watch towers. And most of the watch towers are dirty and have debris all around it. If you know the local language then you may get some help from the local but if you are not familiar with the local language like me then you are most likely not going to get any help from them. The best way to get the views of the birds is to travel along the road and wherever you spot a flock of birds stop there and observe them but be aware of the passing cars and bikes. The best time to travel is from the end of November to the beginning of February as you can get glimpses of Flamingos. And try to visit during the Flamingo Festival which is normally held during the January. During that time boating is also available.

You must spend time and wait for the birds to settle down. No swift movements. There are two watch towers, one near Atakanithippa and one on the road to Venadu.

There is an Environment Education Centre of the forest dept. at Atakanithippa. The staff is very friendly.

Carry an umbrella and food along. Make sure the waste is brought back and let us keep the place clean.

There is no entry ticket and the educational museum is maintained well. Don't expect much during off season, and no activities expect for a playground for kids (which needs maintenance). If you have a good camera, you can get very pics of pelicans in and around the lake. There are certain viewpoints where you can get a decent photographs. Staff over there were very helpful. No restaurants available nearby. Govt of Andhra Pradesh is doing it's bit to preserve this site and also to protect the migratory birds. And this is something that should be appreciated. 5 star for this...

This is the second largest lagoon in India. India's space port Sriharikota is located in the place. Pulicat spread over in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Both parts are declared as a sanctuary by respective governments. The Divisional Forest Officer office is located in Sulurpeta. There is an interpretation centre located in Atakanitippa. There are few bird view points and watch towers made by the forest department along the Sulurpeta-Sriharikota road.

Wide area, if you are lucky you can watch all migratory (in Season time) near the shores else you need to hire fishing/private boats to watch them inside the brackish waters.
