Those who love crafts on stone then this is the place for you. You have to take a ferry to reach the island where caves are built. The ferry cost close to 300 rupees. The view of the Arabian sea is just awesome. My friends and I were amazed to see the beautiful ocean.

You can travel to Elephanta Caves from Gateway of India. The ferry costs around 270 rs per person (return included). The ride would be max 1 hr long. After reaching there you can either take a train which costs around 18 rs (return) per person which takes you towards the caves entrance gate or you can also walk by foot but I would suggest saving that energy for later. From there you have to climb all the way up the hill which is surrounded by market and a bunch of small shops which sell really great incredible and affordable gift items and decorative pieces and jewlery. After reaching on the top first explore the caves and then climb all the way up to the Cannon hills and take fun of the scenic view. You will find a lot of monkeys all the way but they are friendly and innocent so try not to hurt or shoo them away as they won’t do any harm to you. Oh and also it’s better if you book the tickets in advance for entering the caves so you can enter hassel free plus saves time. And you will find ample of good and cheap food options along the way to the top of the caves so don’t carry too much stuff with you so it makes easier to do the climbing and definitely wear some comfortable shoes. I would suggest travelling here during the winters.

Very Nice place to visit
1 hr Boat ride is very marvelous and beautiful
We can see seagull very close to us,and the view of port while we traveling is really amazing, ferry is paid,ee can use any ferry ⛴ for the return for the same ticket 🎟 if we need to sit on uppers side we need to pay 20 Rs more than the normal ticket price .The Sunset View is really amazing too .While traveling through ferry we can touch the sea water in some places ,we can see the seagull very closely because they fly very close to us each other. The Elephanta caves includes 5 caves .Each cave is really beautiful to see. There r lot of monkeys on please be aware of that. Many Stone sculpture can be seen inside these caves.

What a great place to visit.
We had a guide who explained all about the caves and the carvings.
The 120 steps are mostly covered so not too hard in the heat.
Lots of stalls selling things they are good to barter with.
The boat journey over was about 1 hour 15 mins and very smooth
Highly recommend

A nice place, I loved the fairy boat traveling to the cave, try to return in the last fairy boat in the evening, so it would be great timing for sunset when you return, and also the night lighting of the city and cruse.

Caves are maintained, but takes different different charges step by step while you go inside. I don't know why they are not making a single charge including all...

It’s a fantastic picnic spot with a train to CST, bus to Gateway, boat to Elephanta Jetty, toy train and a trek. It’s a family picnic spot. Would recommend to travel in the morning and take the first boat at 9 am. The afternoon heat doesn’t dampen your travel excitement and festive mood.

they have a small number of tickets, they should make it into one ticket from start to end and maybe have a higher prices charge ticket for food and cold water.

Smaller than I had expected, but still worth visiting. Only the main area has sculptures. You could take the trail around the mountain, but the caves elsewhere are unfinished. They might have a couple hollow rooms, some pillars but are otherwise unremarkable to the average person. Beware of the throngs of people taking selfies.

Please. Don't. Feed. The. Monkeys. They will get aggressive when you tease them with food.

And the compass to go back to the marvelous history of my India. It has the essence of superiority of history and well conserved art on rock. As compared to Elora caves it not much but it has its own importance. The name Elephanta came from the large elephant carving on the rock which has been shifted to Mumbai museum. The is one unfinished cave at the end and two other caves on the other mountain which as for now cannot be explored because of no means of transport to that place. The first cave is the most important and well preserved. Has the superior sculpture of lord shiva and his different forms. There are two tickets one of 5₹ and second is of 40₹ for the cave visit but cost only 35₹ if done online. On the exterior you have to trek for about a kilometer to see the canon install by the British, the are two of them still there, and essence of third which is removed or destroyed. You need a ferry ride to reach there. All in all it a great experience to explore.

If you go with a perspective to know more about Indian culture, religion and history and perhaps a guide to walk you through the significance of each of Shiva's idols, then it's worth it. Otherwise you will just be roaming around. Word of warning. Be prepared for the one and a half hour hour ferry, mostly fun though.

Nice place. But the management needs to maintain the cleanliness. Monkeys are there. Be aware if you are with foods. They may hurt you. Hindu culture remains are available with Lord Shiva Ling. Visited with family & I found worth visiting once.

UNESCO World Heritage site with elaborate monolithic rock cut caves situated on an island which takes an hour of ferry ride to reach from the Gateway of India pier.

Stunning.

Takes some walking and climbing some stairs.

People not willing to walk can avail palanquin service from the base level.

Very popular tourist spot in Mumbai.

A piece of history and reminder of a rich culture that our country has had for over thousands of years. The rock and cave paintings and rock cutting architecture is just a marvel to behold. We had to board a ferry from Mumbai near Gateway of India and had to ride for about one hour through the Arabian Sea to get there. The area is huge though the entire part is not open to public. The seagulls were flying over the boats. There were Nataraja idols and other Hindu goddesses. A must visit while in Maharashtra.
