This falls comes under Reserve Forest Area and has wild animals. Hence forest department wont give permission. If you try to enter, they can put fine of 2K per head and detain you or both for trespassing. The trek is extremely difficult, no proper route and high chance of getting lost. To reach the entry point to this falls, you need to pass through a private estate, which is also a criminal activity of trespassing. Hence, even though, the falls is great and the trek is extremely thrilling, don't get fooled by Vlogs and reels. Please avoid visiting here.

Extremely hard but it was fun. The nearer we reach the fall the harder it gets, it was more like Hill Climbing. Hardcore trekking, need to carry lots of food & water otherwise you'll be damned. We couldn't make it to the falls but we were very close, it was just about 2 to 3 hundred metres but it was hard, we had nothing left in our bodies.

It's a nice place, but little hard to reach the falls.. V reach the place via follow the downstream of the falls... In between many huge rocks made the trekking hard & dangerous... Finally after 2-3 hrs of trekking reach the falls, at the time no one was there.. We(4) enjoyed the bathing & take photos then leave the place 😍😍 at return v saw some bisons so better leave the place before 4pm...

I had a unique experience here. I went to the lower part of this falls which can be reached after a long trecking. If you want to enjoy this unique experience, you should start from devadhanapatti and get a localite with you.

On a clear day Rat Tail Falls is visible from the Dum Dum Rock viewpoint on the Batalugundu-Kodaikanal Ghat Road, 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) away to the west. It appears across the valley as a long thin white strip of cascading water on a background of black rock cliff face that juts out of the foothills.

The very edge at the top of the Falls has a low concrete wall on either side concentrating the flow of water to focus the falls into a better rat tail shape. One can walk along the wall and get near the center of the falls. Just below one wall is a large flat rock about 5 ft (1.5 m) wide. One can get down to the edge of the rock to look directly straight down to see a little river at the bottom continuing placidly through the forest. Looking back up to the side, one can watch the water in freefall, mostly silent. The noise of the crashing water below doesn't rise up. The only noise is the water pushing around the stone walls, and some smaller falls just upstream.[2]

The river water coming to the falls, though 9 km (5.6 mi) downstream from Perumal Malai village and apparently clear, may be polluted, and visitors to the area are advised to avoid drinking it.

Thalaiyar Falls are 2.8 kilometres (1.7 mi) more to the right.
Rat Tail Falls is considered inaccessible to the general public, as there is no road to it. The top of the falls is a rewarding and challenging hike destination.[2] Hikers should be cautious, as two Western tourists died in 2006 when they fell from the top of the Falls.[3]

It is possible to hike to the bottom of the falls in the dry season, beginning at the Manjalar Dam. This difficult hike proceeds along a path through Mango orchards and potato fields around the Manjalar Reservoir and up along the stream as far as a small shrine, dedicated to the Goddess Kamakshi. The legend is that Kamakshi was born here at the foot of the falls in a bamboo bush and hence she is called Moonkilanai Kamakshi. This place is called Amma Machhu, meaning in the middle of a grove of teak trees.

Beyond this point one must climb up along the stream, going up, over and around increasingly large boulders with difficulty, till arriving at the bottom of the falls, where there is a pool about 30 metres (98 ft) by 60 metres (200 ft). The return hike is more difficult. The full hike there and back covers about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) and takes a full day.[3]

Manjalar Dam is at the end of Manjalar Road about 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi) north from SH-36 at Devadanapatti town beginning along Kamatchi Amman temple road

@@@ BEAUTIFUL and TREMENDOUS falls in tamilnadu. It has a MAJESTIC view. Which is located at manjalar river, Murugumalai R F, western ghats near manjalar dam.

### It is drops from 815 meters or 2673 feets above the sea level. It has 297 meters or 975 feets altitude. If you want to go there you have to walk in hill trails around 2 kilometres from foothills.

$$$ Now a days forest department is not allowed to go there. Because there is some wild animals and this is a deep jungle.

*** Perumal malai, moolaiyar, pannaikaadu such as hills range places gives sufficient water to the manjalar river. There is High water flow in monsoon time.

//// There is a moongilanai kamatchi Amman temple in trail path of this falls. You have to walk in hill trail from moongilanai kamatchi Amman temple for 30 minutes to reach here.

+++ You can see this falls from 20 kilometres away in particular place. This falls is called also RAT TAIL falls. Everybody can't go there because the trail path is hard.

??? There is one beautiful view point to see this falls at Kodaikanal to batlagundu road. You can see the entire fall's view from here.

One of the tallest waterfalls in Tamil nadu

Also known as Rat Tail Falls, Thalaiyar Falls is located in the lush green slopes of Palani Hill ranges in the Dindigul District, in Kodaikanal. With a height of 297m, it is the highest waterfall in Tamil Nadu, the sixth highest waterfall in India. There is a view tower in the park at the Dum Dum Rock, from where you can get a beautiful view of the falls and the Manjalar Dam. There is a hiking route near the waterfall.

The river water coming to the falls is from Perumal Malai village, through a 9 km downstream and is said to be clear. On the contrary, it may be polluted, and hence, visitors to the area are advised to avoid drinking it.

On a bright day, the falls is visible from the Dum Dum Rock viewpoint on the Batalugundu-Kodaikanal Ghat Road; where it appears like a white long and narrow strip of water on a background of the black rock cliff face. According to legends, Lord Muruga used to visit this rock on his way to the Palani Hills.

At the top of the falls, at the very edge of the cliff, is a low concentrated wall on either side, tapering the flow of water into a rat tail shape. One can walk along the wall and get to the center of the falls.

Right below one of the walls, is a large flat rock, about five ft wide. If one gets down to the edge of this stone, they can directly see a little river at the bottom flowing through the forest. On the side, one can enjoy the calm of the silent waterfall.

Hiking is allowed only at the bottom of the falls and that too in the dry seasons. The hike begins at the Manjalar Dam which passes through the mango orchards and potato fields around the Manjalar Reservoir and then goes up along the watercourse to the small temple of Goddess Kamakshi. One must follow the stream after this point.

After this point, one needs to climb up the stream, crossing large and difficult boulders until arriving at the falls base. Here, there is a pool of about 30 m (98 ft) by 60 m (200 ft). The return hike is more challenging. The full walk covers 15 km and takes an entire day.
