I visited this place on Khalanga mela, which was held at Sagar Tal near this place. It is an important history related to Anglo-gurkha war that took place here. Although the British won this war, however they acknowledged the bravery of the Gurkhas. This later lead to the creation of the Gurkha regiment in the British Indian army. The mountain on which Khalanga is located, is a lush green forest. A lot of biodiversity can be found at this place.

This place is steeped in history, serving as a testament to the incredible resilience and bravery of the Gorkhas, who managed to bring an entire British army to its knees. The story of their triumph echoes through the ages, making this spot a poignant reminder of a remarkable chapter in history.

As you embark on your journey here, the roads initially welcome you with their smooth, inviting surface. However, it's worth noting that the final stretch, spanning around 600 to 700 meters, presents a broken and rugged path. This adds an element of adventure to your visit, as you navigate through this terrain to reach your destination.

Despite not being at a high altitude, the temperature here remains pleasantly cool, thanks to the encompassing jungle. The road itself is a visual delight, winding through lush greenery, making it a picturesque route that's perfect for photography enthusiasts. If you plan a picnic, do remember to be responsible and leave no trace behind.

For nature enthusiasts, this location offers an idyllic setting for various outdoor activities. Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll, an invigorating jog, or a refreshing bike ride, this road has it all. The canopy of trees provides ample shade, and the air is filled with the melodies of birds, creating a soothing and refreshing ambiance that feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of traffic. It's a haven for those who seek a peaceful communion with nature and a connection with the past while reveling in the beauty of the present.

Khalanga War Memorial is a heritage monument in Dehradun, India. It is dedicated to the memory of Gorkha soldiers who fought against the British in 1814 at the Battle of Nalapani. This was the first battle of the Anglo-Nepalese War. It has been described as the only monument in warfare history erected by a victorious army for its adversaries. The British were reportedly impressed by the Gorkhas' valor.

A memorial was built to honor some of the finest soldiers, and a fair was held annually to commemorate the soldiers and celebrate Gorkha culture and history. The way toward the memorial is as scenic as possible, so I recommend visiting in the morning and returning to the grounds before sunset. The forest doesn't have any lights, hardly any signs or people, and would be extremely difficult to navigate as a tourist. This is especially difficult on a two-wheeler because of the roads and steep curves. Follow the map towards Khalanga War Memorial Ground, and take the road ascending upwards to the end. The main place is at the end of the road.

Did a trek to this place through a rough path. It's a place of historical importance. There are also few small unmanned temples around. One needs to carry own water and eatables as there aren't any around.

Done trek to Khalanga War Memorial from Raipur Side. It is easy trek of around 8 kms one side. On return taken unpaved forest route which saves around 1 km. You can also drive car/ bike till 2 km short of memorial from where you can trek for 2 kms to reach here Enjoyed the greens and solitude of the place.

Green and secluded place. The way to the top is a typical hilly road and the surroundings are blissful . There are many shortcuts to the top apart from the paved road, but they can only be covered on foot. The memorial itself is not much, just a pillar on a pedestal but the experience of getting there and the views are what make going there worthwhile. You can view all of Sahastradhara Road from the top, although trees hinder the view.
PS- there are about 2 temple sort of structures on the way and an almost dried lake with lots of Tibetan flags here and there .

The way leading up to the memorial is awesome especially if it has rained or is still drizzling. This is a quiet place to sit and ponder over your thoughts all the while you are coming to terms with the bravado this memorial symbolizes.

I didn't know I was going to the beautiful location of the historic war memorial. Just went on a walk up the hill through the Khalanga Dwar in a morning, and it turned into trekking. Found a lot of locals going up and coming back on foot. Few people also come on their vehicles, park them somewhere, and then start up. There's a Tibbetan colony, an ashram and a temple on the way. Moving through the tall trees and the greenery and stones around, I felt I have come in a different long-missed world. So much peace you experience! It's not just the 15-30 minutes you may like to spend at the war memorial on the hill top, you also immensely enjoy the trekking journey of about an hour. You can also go by your vehicle, but I would recommend to go by foot if you have time and are healthy to do so. And off course the memorial is of a historic war valiantly fought by the Gorkhas against the British army; you can read about it on the image of the display board put up by me along side this review.

It was Britishers who constructed Khalanga War Memorial in the memory of their General "Gilaspy" and other army men as well as Gorkha General "Balbhadra Thapa" to pay tribute to their courage jointly after the battle of Nalapani which was faught in 1814.

History- Famous Gorkha War or Anglo-Nepalese or Anglo-Gorkha War was fought between Britishers and Gorkhas of Nepal. In Battel of Nalapani, 600 Gorkhas fought bravely against 3000 odd soldiers in Khalanga Fort near Nalapani, Dehradun. For six weeks, Gorkhas were protecting the fort without food and water. Impressed by the unmatched bravery, Britishers erected the Khalanga (Kalinga) War Memorial to honor Gorkhas. After that Britishers recruits Gorkhas in their army too. This memorial is under conservation of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

War memorial is situated on the top of the hill, 5km ride through topavan forest from Dehradun city. The ride through the forest itself is a breathtaking scene. Big tress and dense foliage is what you will see. The curvy roads to the memory is only the best thing. You could stop in the midst of forest to meet nature. The memorial has the beautiful view of the city. Do read the story about it.
