Possibly Coimbatore gets its name from the the goddess Koniamman . The temple is located in the heart 9f the city.

Koniamman is the guardian deity of the city. Long ago there was an Irula chieftain known as Kovan and the city derives its name from his.  He was greatly devoted to Koniamman who is none other than Devi herself. Interestingly Koniamman takes the name by virtue of being the deity who protected the ruler and the ruled. Subsequently a temple was built for her near the Fort area on the Big Bazaar Street. The elders of the city got together a endowed a larger established during the year 1981 and now a large 85 feet tall and imposing Raja Gopuram has been added to the temple in 2014. The Icon is representative of Durga Mahishasuramardini, the destroyer of evil and the protector of the down trodden and afflicted.

The temple The Koniamman Temple is quite spacious and has shrines for Panchamukha Vinayakar,Navagrahams with their consorts, Shantha Vinayakar, Subramanyaswamy with his consorts Valli and Devayani,Adi Koniamman, Durgai Amman and Koniamman. The Sanctum tower has three Kalasams and this is quite unique. The lovely Paavai lamps in the Mahamandapam are a sight to behold. This temple offers Annadanam to about 100 people everyday. The Prasadam counter offers quite a few tasty items. Devotees offer salt at the entrance in order to ward of evil and the effects of a jealous eye.

Temple Timings - 6 AM to 12.30 PM and 4 PM to 9 PM.

I went to this temple on last Friday. Its really powerful God.Its open till noon 12 and after that it's open at 4pm only. And separate receipt for doing Pooja per head rs 10. And few people doing engagement in this temple. There are donation counter, slipper counters, Pooja counter, etc and only issue i faced is parking. There's no parking facilities all. Apart from that all good and fine.

A 'Never Miss' temple that is present at the heart of Coimbatore. The unique presence of Ghaf and Cannonball trees is the temple's speciality. Another notable feature of the temple is 'Pancha Muga Ganapathy' and the 'Navagrahahs with their consorts'.

Powerful God koni Amman is giving dharsan to all her devotees.. situated at the centre of the city.. the temple is very near by to Sangameshwarar temple (also known as Kottai easwaran Kovil) two wheeler could be parked on the road.. there is a private parking at the opposite side of the temple for four wheelers.. but better go by a bus.. plenty of buses are available.. temple is just 100 meters from the bus station..
