Brief history:
His holiness Vadiraja Swamy and Ballala and Ballalthi (Heggade) decided to install a Shivalinga at East Kuduma (present Dharmastala). Hence they humbly requested Annappa swamy (Panjulli Daiva) to get the Shivalinga from the seventh pond of Kadri Lake after obtaining permission from Lord Manjunatha of Kadri. Accordingly, Annappa Swamy was happily carrying the Shivalinga in a great hurry to Kuduma. On his way back, when Annappa swamy reached Perara, Balavandi saw him and prevented him from going further. Balavandi asked Annappa swamy, “Where do you come from? Where are you going? What are you carrying with you?”. Annappa swamy considering Balavandi as an ordinary person did not show any sign of respect. Therefore he replied, “What does it matter to you, where I come from or where I go?. I am carrying a Shivalinga”.

Balavandi became angry. He did not allow Annappa Swamy to take even one step further. Both of them went wild and fought. In the end, Balavandi confiscated the Shivalinga from Annappa swamy. Then Annappa swamy said, “Dear Balavandi, I am defeated. Please give me the Shivalinga. I have promised Ballala and Ballalthi of Kuduma that I would bring the Shivalinga which should be installed before dawn. Please help me in keeping up my words”. On hearing this appeal, Balavandi wanted to know what benefit he would get for returning the Shivalinga. Annappa swamy promised Balavandi that it would be possible for the devotees to get the relief from him when they made the offerings to Balavandi even if the devotees had promised to make those offerings at East Kuduma (Dharmastala). But if the promise was made to offer to Balavandi, it could not be settled at Kuduma. Being satisfied with the words of Annappa Swamy, Balavandi returned the Shivalinga. Annappa Swamy returned to Kuduma and informed about the obstacles he faced because of Balavandi, the great power of Perara, to His Holiness Vadiraja Swamy. Vadiraja Swamy asked Annappa Swamy to bring Balavandi to Kuduma for the installation of the Shivalinga. Annappa Swamy proceeded to Perara and informed Balavandi about the situation. “I will stay at Kuduma until the installation of the shivalinga. Once the task is over I will return", replied Balavandi. Both reached to Kuduma with the speed of wind. Under the guidance and direction of Vadiraja Swamy, the Shivalinga was installed. Balavandi was honoured at Kuduma. In the east, Kuduma was called Dharmasthala and in the west Perara was called Dharmasthana.
