The smaller of the two cremation ghats, this one primarily for local residents. Easy to get quite close if you're walking to the other side.

Harishchandra Ghat, also known as Adi Manikarnika, is one of the oldest and most sacred ghats in Varanasi, India. It is named after the legendary King Harishchandra, who is often revered as the epitome of truth and righteousness.

The ghat is steeped in mythology and history. According to Hindu scriptures, King Harishchandra once worked at this very cremation ground as a 'Dom', or one who supervises cremations, as part of a divine test of his integrity and devotion. He even had to cremate his own son and accepted his wife's golden bangle as a fee, all while maintaining his steadfast commitment to truth.

Impressed by his unwavering dedication to duty and truth, the Gods restored his lost kingdom and his dead son to him. Since then, Harishchandra Ghat has symbolized the ultimate pursuit of truth and duty, regardless of the personal sacrifices required.

Today, the ghat is one of the two cremation grounds in Varanasi, the other being Manikarnika Ghat. It is believed that those who are cremated here achieve 'Moksha', or liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

Despite the grim reality of death and cremation, the ghat is a place of profound spirituality and tranquility. The sight of the eternal flames, the chanting of Vedic hymns, and the serene Ganges flowing by, all contribute to an atmosphere of peace and introspection.

In essence, Harishchandra Ghat is not just a cremation ground, but a testament to the enduring values of truth and duty that transcend life itself. It's a place where death is not seen as an end, but as a passage to a higher realm of existence.

The second cremation ghat of Kashi after Manikarnika. You will find the usual daily morning and evening aarti held alongside cremation grounds. It also houses the modern cremating facility in an elevated building beside. It helps in diverting the crowd from overcrowded Manikarnika ghat. Prefer walking from Chet singh ghat to here once.

It's not exactly a tourist destination. The oldest city in the world with one of the oldest death rituals. Here all day long bodies are burned on fires as to the Hindu customs.

Definitely a sight to see. Also many shrines for shiva, prayer fires burning in respect. Sometimes you will find singing and prayer happening Round the fire.

Harishchandra Ghat is one of Varanasi's oldest ghats. There were many stories about that Maharaja Harishchandra he himself cremated his Own son this Ghat. As a result the ghat was given the name Maharaja Harishchandra Ghat. It is believed that whoever is cremated here receives moksha. The first time I visited there was in December of 2021. I was bewildered to see this place. I was seated there for almost 3 hours and observed all the things that happened. And i took mahaprasad to this place.

Maharaja Harishchandra Ghat is an excellent place to observe the sunrise and the sunset and experience the beauty of nature closely. In Hindu mythology it is believed that if a person is cremated at the Harish Chandra Ghat, that person gets salvation or "moksha".
This is also the ghat where the evening Ganga Aarthi takes place attracting a huge crowd.
