CHHATRIS OF SCINDIA DYNASTY

At a distance of 5 km from Gwalior Junction and 6 km from Gwalior Fort, the Chhatris are the memorial of Scindia dynasty rulers of Gwalior. Situated in Chhatri Bazar, the Chhattris of the Scindia dynasty are one among the prominent attractions in Gwalior city.

Renowned for its architectural brilliance and beautiful structures, the Chhatris are located in a beautiful garden. These are elevated, dome-shaped pavilions used as an element in Indian architecture. The first chhatri was built in 1817 CE to commemorate Jayaji Rao Scindia. Since then other Chhatris have been added. The older ones are built in yellow and pink sandstone and are of great architectural value.

Apart from others, the Chhatris of Jiwaji Rao Scindia, Daulat Rao Scindia and Janko ji Rao Scindia are well known. These Chhatris preserve the beauty of the medieval period and are decorated with stone carvings of elephants, horses and tigers. These monuments have been built with pink and white stones. There is a large beautiful tank between the umbrellas of Madhav Rao Scindia and Maharani Shakya Raje Scindia.
After the Mughals, the Scindia rulers of the Maratha dynasty ruled Gwalior.

The chhatris of Scindia are in Shiva Puri, which means the city of Lord Shiva, home of many temples.

This place developed during the time of the Scindia dynasty. The Scindia chhatris are a classic example of medieval Hindu architecture.

It is located in Amarkantak, a few kilometers from the city of Gwalior.

Nice place for couples.

This is a great place for a morning stroll and is one of the famous places in Gwalior to visit. Now let's come to the main point. There is an entry fee for everyone. I paid Rs. 650 for a monthly plan. I once used the washroom; the male washroom door was locked, and the security person told me to use the female washroom. Weird enough, right? The washroom was in quite bad shape. The toilet seats were broken and soiled, and the flush wasn’t working. I was about to vomit, but I held my breath and used the restroom. Imagine that this is one of the popular tourist spots in Gwalior, which also represents the legacy of Scindias. As well, I have seen some people peeing in the open inside the premises. This is an urge to the management: please look into all this.
I was born and brought here, but I work outside. But I'm still hopeful things will change for the better!
