The Asifi Masjid and Imambara, located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, is a magnificent architectural complex that serves as a significant religious and cultural landmark in the city. Built during the reign of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in the 18th century, this imposing structure showcases the grandeur of Mughal and Awadhi architecture, reflecting the rich heritage of the region.

The complex comprises two distinct components: the Asifi Masjid (mosque) and the Imambara (assembly hall), each with its own unique features and historical significance. The Asifi Masjid, with its towering minarets, intricately carved arches, and elegant domes, serves as a place of worship for the Muslim community, offering a serene sanctuary for prayer and contemplation.

Adjacent to the mosque is the imposing Imambara, a vast hall adorned with ornate decorations, elaborate chandeliers, and exquisite calligraphy. This architectural marvel was originally built to serve as a gathering place for Shia Muslims during Muharram, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, grandson of Prophet Muhammad.

One of the most striking features of the Imambara is its labyrinthine network of passages and chambers, known as the Bhulbhulaiya. This maze-like structure, with its interlocking corridors and hidden staircases, is a marvel of engineering and serves as a popular tourist attraction, challenging visitors to navigate its intricate layout.

Moreover, the Asifi Masjid and Imambara complex is steeped in history and legend, with tales of royal patronage, architectural ingenuity, and cultural splendor. It is said that Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula commissioned the construction of the complex as a gesture of gratitude to fulfill a vow made during a period of drought, promising to build a grand edifice if the city was spared from famine.

Today, the Asifi Masjid and Imambara stand as enduring symbols of Lucknow's rich cultural heritage and religious diversity. They attract visitors from far and wide, drawn not only by their architectural beauty but also by the spiritual significance and historical legacy they embody.

In essence, the Asifi Masjid and Imambara complex encapsulate the essence of Lucknow – a city renowned for its artistic elegance, architectural splendor, and rich tapestry of cultures. As a testament to the city's glorious past and enduring legacy, they continue to inspire awe and reverence among all who behold their magnificence.

Asfi mosque located to the right of the gate of the Bara Imambara was built by Asaf-ud-Daula, the nawab wazir of Oudh ( from 26 January 1775 to 21 September 1797) and the son of Shuja-ud-Dowlah . Built on a two-storied plinth it consists of two tall minarets in the courtyard. One can get a clear view of the mosque from the top of the Bhulbhulaiya or maze, where the builder of the mosque is buried. This intricate maze has numerous passages, which can confuse the people to find the way out. A five-storied step-well (bowli) lies across the mosque is an added attraction. The mosque is opened only to the Muslims.

Asifi Masjid or Asifi Mosque is among the prime tourist attraction of Lucknow. Asifi Masjid is the part of famous Islamic monument Bara Imambara of the Lucknow.

Lucknow Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula has started construction of Bara Imambara in 1785 with prime object of generating employment for the natives.  This took about six years  [ work complete in 1791] and an investment of nearly one million rupees  for creating this fabulous Islamic monument.

Asifi Masjid, shrine named after the Nawab’s name is a construction inside the Bara Imambara. Asifi Masjid or Asifi Mosque is the last monument constructed without use of Iron and any help from the Europeans experts of building construction.

This might surprise many visitors to notice “Non Muslim is prohibited to enter the mosque” sign board just outside the Asfi Masjid Lucknow.

I recently visited the Aasif Masjid in Lucknow and I was thoroughly impressed by the beauty and tranquility of the mosque. The architecture is stunning, with intricate designs and patterns adorning the walls and domes. The interior is spacious and well-lit, with a peaceful atmosphere that encourages reflection and contemplation.

The worshippers at the Aasif Masjid were also very welcoming and friendly, which added to the positive experience. The imam's sermons were insightful and delivered with passion, and there were also a variety of educational programs and activities available for attendees.

Overall, I highly recommend a visit to the Aasif Masjid for anyone in the Lucknow area. It's a beautiful and peaceful place that truly embodies the spirit of Islam.
