Temple Hong Tiek Hian

Hong Tiek Hian at Dukuh Street, Surabaya. This is the oldest temple in Surabaya. Beside for pray, this temple is often use for traditional Chinese art performances, such as wayang potehi and for celebrate chinese new year or Imlek. This location is in the north of Surabaya and the place mixture between Javanese and Chinese village. Wonderful heritage building.

I personally look this place as the most representative tourism place for Surabaya rather than other touristic places. Here in this holy temple, three different religions and beliefs are doing their prayer in the same place at the same time. It's not only owned by Buddhism but also Taoism and local belief. In the first floor, we can watch a puppet show for free. The puppet itself represents the acculturation between Chinese newcomers and local culture. The story lines were divided into many sections. This place is so potential for tourism although it seems like the govt not pay enough attention to it. There's also a lady who stay behind a desk who can give you lots of infos about this temple and the religions if you're curious like me.

To my knowledge, this is the only place in Surabaya to watch the "Wayang Potehi" show, a mixture between Javanese and Chinese culture. Visited it once during the tour provided by the House of Sampoerna museum. The temple is open to people from other religions.

Salah satu klenteng tertua di Surabaya yang diduga ada sejak tentara tar tar datang ke Surabaya. Tapi terlepas dari itu, ini satu-satunya klenteng yang menggelar pertunjukan wayang potehi setiap hari, ada atau tidak adanya penonton. Dan seperti klenteng-klentenf lain di Surabaya, siapapun dan dari agama apapun bisa berkunjung

Area parkir mobil terbatas sepanjang gang diluar klenteng, bangunan terbagi menjadi sisi kanan dan kiri serta ada bagian atas, untuk urutan sembayang bisa ditanyakan ke pengurus yang ada di area.
Protokol kesehatan hanya disediakan wastafel.
Kondisi saat pandemi tidak seramai sebelum pandemi banyak warga sekitar yang meminta sumbangan.

Klenteng tertua di Surabaya sekaligus juga masuk dalam daftar klenteng tertua di Indonesia. Usia klenteng ini sudah terbilang tua, yaitu 728 tahun (didirikan pada tahun 1293 oleh pasukan Tar Tar Kubilai Khan). Klenteng ini berdiri pada masa kerajaan Majapahit dan awal berdirinya kota Surabaya.

Bagi Anda yang sedang berada di Surabaya tidak ada salahnya jika mampir sebentar di kelenteng tertua di Kota Surabaya ini. Bagi yang beragama buddha dan khonghucu dapa beribadah ditempat ini, dan yang non biddha dan non khonghucu dapat menikmati arsitektur kelenteng tertua ini sebari menyaksikan pertunjukan wayang Potehi. Warisan budaya Nusantara yang harus tetap dijaga dan diabadikan.
