Sáfrány Pisztrángudvar

7/9/23 ggl Thursday afternoon snack - Safrsny Halfustolde

This is #1 in TA and deserves it for its uniqueness! We came in the afternoon off peak when it was quiet, with only another couple 'dining'. Open air, simple kiosk selling smoked trout, vacuum packed, whole or filleted, paying by the kilo (filleted more expensive obviously). You are served basically the unwrapped cold (not hot as in a recent Ggl review) trout on its metallic paper base, an optional red and white cabbage salad, mustard and/or bread. It's not cheap cheap but it is an experience you won't forget. Drinks are basic and non alcoholic. Luckily we had brought some home made risotto and a bottle of Tokaji Sargamuskstoli which went well.

We arrived just after 3pm and after ordering we sat on a picnic bench with our tray, right by the trout pond listening to their plopping around and the nearby mini waterfalls; all very idyllic and unique.

The kiosk closed at 4 so we had over half an hour there enjoying the ambiance. Only a few others shared the experience. Judging by the extra tables by the path this gets very busy in high season and they have not time to vacuum pack the fish so it is sold off the smoking sticks as seen in the previous images.

Maybe hot (unpackaged) trout is served at actual lunchtime?

We bought a fillet, salad and mustard but no bread as the friendly woman had run out of it.

It tasted really nice, reminding me of smoked eel in Węgorzewo, Poland, but easier to handle. I'd have preferred it not having been vacuum wrapped but we were out of season.

Other people came ate and went whilst we 'dined' (with our extra risotto and wine!)

Everything was served on a tray with a paper mat so after eating it's separated and dropped into the bin and tray put on the pile of trays. Recyclables (plastic bottles) in the yellow bin. A bit like McD ..not!

Overall a unique experience and worth the expense!

After leaving we walked past the ponds which got more 'derelict' upstream so maybe it was a bigger business years ago pre covid? I'm sure they supply posh restaurants in Budapest!

PS do not feed the fish....anything!

On the way to the waterfall there is this place which seems to be not a big deal from the outside but I have to tell you that the fish was simply amazing. Never had such a juice fresh fish here in Hungary

Great, delicious, quality trout. Tea was also good. (choice of different sort of teas)

Here you can have some of the best smoked trout fresh out of the pond, there is always smoked trout at hand so there is no need to order ahead, there aren't many options for food but the ones that are there are delicious enough for an enjoyable meal, the smoked whole trout is delicious and the fries trout fillet sandwich is yummy as well, there aren't many drinking options either but the place definitely deserves a visit.

It was close to 16.00. Google said they would close at 16. Bummer, took too much time to get here, yet I've enjoyed every bit of the road on the picturesque landscape.
16:10. Relief, some people are still buying, eating.
Got 2 trouts, with really nice suggestion what kind of wine to get next to it (Rose, and wine wines).
Got home, heated up the trouts. You have to try this smoked trout! I have never tasted such a great trout so far! I guess their smoking method is a kind of patent, and yes, it has its effect. Friable, soft, tasty fish. Having some vegetables as side-dish and also vino di casa, I was the most happy person on the planet at those moments! 🙂

Amazing smells of smoked fish lure you over to a rustic outdoor seating area with probably the nicest smoked fish I've ever tasted, smoked on site, where you're seated. The fish are from the on site trout farm. Amazing. Lovely walk too.

Delicious smoked traut with an amazing enviroment. If you visit Szilvasvarad i would definately recommend you visit this small place.

Szenzációs büfé. Közvetlenül a halóvoda mellett, hangulatos kialakítású kerthelyiség. Mi nagyon szeretjük a füstölt halakat és eddig ennél finomabbat nem kóstoltunk. Már elmentünk volna mellette amikor a friss füstölés illata visszacsábított, megvártuk, hogy kinyissanak és nem bántuk meg. Helyben fogyasztásra frissen a kemencéből vette elő nekünk a halacskákat. Sokat vettünk készen otthonra is.

Mindenkinek ajánlom. Én imádom a pisztrángot, de ilyen finomat még sehol sem ettem. Össze sem lehet hasonlítani az olajban sült pisztránggal ezt az omlós, ízdús finomságot. 🥰
Hoztunk haza is és másnap is nagyon finom volt.

Friss és ízletes füstölt pisztráng. Köret csak kenyér van, el tudtam volna viselni sült krumplit, de így is jó volt.

Az egész Szalajka-völgy leghangulatosabb pisztángozója közvetlenül a medencék mellett. Kiváló a füstölt pisztáng, kedves kiszolgálás.

A kemencében sült pisztráng nagyon egyedi. Máshol nem találkoztam ilyen zamatos és ízes változattal, egyedi és emlékezetes élmény. Én hiányoltam még egy pár változatot és valamivel több körettel is kombináltam volna a kenyeren kívül (nincs sültkrumpli, csak mustár van szószként).
