Great place to stop and stretch. The road up from Chicacao has lots of landslides on the road so be careful.

Beautiful place, we went with a bird watching guide and observed 5 Quetzals, several Tucans, 2 Crested Guan, and other birds. However, there are a lot of locals destroying the habitat by clearing forest for palm leaf farming (used for tamales) and firewood. We saw and heard many locals chopping and carrying wood (and bringing in chainsaws) and clipping palm leaves from fields where the forest has already been cleared. I'm sorry to report that unless authorities begin to enforce the reserve's boundaries, these birds will disappear from the area along with their habitat.

Highly recommend hiring a guide to find these amazing birds, and to incentivize their protection. Would not recommend hiking without a guide, could be dangerous and it is difficult to spot these birds without knowing what to look for. We would've walked right past them.
