Hostal El Portal de Semuc Champey

Top location, like 2 minutes walk from the entrance of Semuc Champey. A nice hostel, the rooms were fine although a bit small but completely sufficient.

Good location and cabanas are really nice. Showers are cold but I didn't had a place so far with warm showers anyway. Bed is comfy and staff is helpful

The rooms are good size but with a lot of old things in them, which take up much space. The beds were soft and comfortable. But my highest praise goes to the shower! Been traveling Guatemala quite a bit and stayed at many hotels and hostels and have to say this was by far the best shower I've had here in this lovely country! So powerful and with morevthan plenty of hot water and it was just perfect! Great location also, short walk downtown plus a great Jade-museum next door. To top it all was lovely service and a kitchenette on the first floor where you could get coffee and more plus put your drinks/good in the refrigerator if you need. Highly recommended 🙂

Amazing place, friendly and helpful staff, super close to Semuc Champey, wildlife just outside your balcony. Monkeys climbing in trees. Don't worry about not having internet. If anything the staff will help to check transport for your next city. Just great!!!

We had a private room with shared bathroom the walls are pretty thin so we could hear our neighbors but they were mostly quiet. Other than that the location is great and the staff is very helpful. We were struggling to find transportation to continue our trip since there were no shuttles in the direction we were heading but the staff solved this for us and arranged transport for a decent price.

Best place to stay at to visit Samuc Champey. Literally a 2 minute walk. There’s complimentary ride to the hostel when you arrive in Lanquin at 9am (you have to pay for your ride out though). Super clean, friendly staff & the tilapia empanizado was so good.

Be prepared to not have wifi, hot water or much electricity as you are in the middle of the jungle. The view from the restaurant deck is beautiful and honestly all you need when hanging at the hostel.

Went there in 2012 (sorry for lateness) and it was a blast. Rustic hostel in the middle of the Guatemalan jungle, so it's not going to have comforts of a western hostel. But it was quiet, authentic, laid-back, with good food and a fun evening social scene. When we went, there must've been ~35 people hanging out in the bar at night. A tarantula wandered in from the jungle and everyone had a great time passing him around on each other's arms. Very fun stay.

This is a bare minimum accomodation. For less than $9 American for each of us, 3 in our group, we can a place to rest walking distance from Semuc Champey. Our room was a second story open air room. Think camping with a bed. No power outlets in the room, but they'll gladly charge any device you want at the bar. Showers were cold, but functional and clean. If you're someone who can't sleep outdoors, look elsewhere. Wouldn't recommend this as a multi night stay, but a great way to be close to the hike early in the morning and spend the most time at the lagoon

Loved it. Cave tour not recommended for kids or elderly, very dangerous. Tube down river is beautiful. Getting to hostel is a ride you will never forget. Bucket list#2(Done)

Beautiful place right next to Semuc Champey. No wifi and no power for most of the day (6pm-10pm only) BUT you don't need it. You should be taking in the beautiful surroundings. Food was really great and dorms were nice and clean. The drive here is crazy but well worth it, highly recommend this place.

You have electricity from 6:00pm to 11:00pm and it's enough. No WiFi.
You don't have a big selection of food, but it's good.

Big + first of all; after I left El Portal, I've noticed that I forgot a few important things at my room. The staff of el Portal did an incredibly good job, they've sent my electronic equipment on the next day with their driver to my hostel 300 km away in Antigua for free!

5 nights at el portal in a privet cabin..i have booked thru booking...
The place is looks 100% more beautiful then the picture they put..
Also..very clean and great employees ..
Most important is that el portal is 2 minute walking to the samuc shampey entrance..
No hot water . For me it worse it.

The place is super close to semuc champey, less than 10min walk. The hosts are very friendly, common area is super clean, food was really tasty! Highly recommended!
