Societe Generale Ghana (Cape Coast Branch)

Cape Coast is where my experience with SG Ghana began and I have since not had any regrets. However, I became kind of disillusioned when there was a delay in the renewal of my VISA Credit Card for almost six months. Praise and thanks be to Allah when a text message received this evening, rekindle the trust I have in SG GH. The card is finally home and that we contact our branch for collection. Salam SG GH.

TOURISTS BEWARE!
The ATM will warn you of a fee of 20 cedis for withdrawing money using a foreign debit card. I clicked "No," because I didn't wish to proceed, preferring to use one of the free ATMs nearby instead. The ATM dispensed money and charged me the fee anyway. So I waited until the bank opened to speak with the manager and request a return of the fee I didn't elect to pay in the first place; I was told that it's not their fault, there's nothing they can do, I need to report it to my home bank who will do an investigation, etc. I'm not entirely sure how a banking institution halfway across the world is capable of investigating a physical ATM's defects..? One of the security guards told me it's happened to other people before. Not sure if anyone else reported it and if they were reimbursed, but clearly the bank has done nothing to fix the issue. Very frustrating. It may not seem like a lot of money to some, but for me it's an entire day's food allowance. :(

For interested travellers: I try to use CalBank ATMs in Ghana wherever possible as they don't charge fees and are usually well-stocked!

Their services are so poor, so many delays. After paying off my loan, they have refused to release my affordability for about three weeks now. I will never advice anyone to take a loan from them.
