Joining Fisheries Enforcement Unit made me to know much places in Ghana. I love this Unit.

The formation of the Fisheries Enforcement Unit was as a result of depletion of Ghanaian fish stocks. It has been observed with great concerned for about many years that, Ghanaian fishers have developed many ways to harvest fish in Marine waters.

This practices have spread across the whole coastal communities in Ghana. From Newtown at La Cote D'Ivore border to Aflao Togo border, all fishers uses lights, dynamite, carbide, formalin, DDT, monofilament net (rubber net), etc to fish.

This doesn't happen in Marine Waters alone, in our freshwaters, people use these same method to fish. The fish stocks are completely depleted as a result of this things. We also forget the health implications of consuming chemically harvested fish.

God been so good, some NGOs such as Friends of the Nation, Hen mpoano etc has come out with plans to revive the fishery Industry by sensitizing the Fisher folks to use the best methods to fish in Ghanaian waters.

The education of the Fisher folks started in 2012 to 2014 and still on going where the Fisheries Enforcement Unit was established to enforce the Fisheries laws.

Really the unit had done a great job for some years now, however, there were few challenges confronting the unit. The stretch of the landing beaches are very vast such that the personnel of the unit cannot reach all the communities.

Education was however extend to these communities in order to comply voluntarily to the Fisheries laws but what do we see, Ghanaian fishers are not complying with this laws. Others keep blaming some communities of using these and that.

Political interference, luck of logistics in terms of fuel to drive the personnel to do job becomes a tag of war. Some of the Administrator's are not committed at all.

However, most thanks goes to the Friends of the Nation based at Adiembra Sekondi funded or supported by USAID, managed to purchased two vans and two pickup for the unit to carried on their duties.

This is how Fisheries Enforcement Unit came about.

Please I put this brief here for any Ghanaian outside the country or in the country to think about this. This is very important and it's real. Let us all support the NGOs and the unit to rally behind the whistle blower(media) to put a total stop to all these negative practices so that our future generations might not blame us of irresponsible attitudes of ours contributed to the depletion of the fish stocks.

The most beautiful aspect of it is that, the fish stocks can be revived within a short period if only we all comply voluntarily not use any negative means.

Remember the laws are working, if you are caught, you may end up at law Court. This time round, the finds/penalty are huge. You can go to jail. Please take note.

Thanks.
