Duke Street Cemetery

Beautiful cemetery with old Victorian graves. Almost forgotten about with the overgrown grasses.

Large cemetery, nicely kept and peaceful

People are dying to get in here! Good place, my uncle was buried here.

I have several members of my family buried here. I visit every week, without fail. There is good access to the recent graves, you can drive in via the Duke Street entrance and park relatively close.
The water taps have been recently replaced and are much clearer to see, mounted on blue posts.
Plenty of recycling bins dotted about. It's a shame there aren't any green bins for plant waste, it could be composted and used onsite.
It is disappointing to see some of the old graves towards the middle very neglected. Overgrown with weeds and falling over, the excuse is it's a 'wildlife area'.
Ignorant dog owners use the cemetery as a toilet, I have had to remove dog mess from my daughter's grave, it was very distressing. But there is never anyone on site to police it. There only ever seems to be contractors who state it is not there job.
There are hardly any benches to sit and contemplate, it would be nice to see some dedicated benches.
The garden maintenance is fulfilled by a contractor. They cut the grass with petrol strimmers and ride-on mowers. Every two/three weeks in summer, then they stop from October until spring. It's a disgrace. When you visit after the grass has been hacked it's a terrible mess. Loose grass everywhere, stuck to the headstones, broken plastic and debris littering the graves. It's a disgusting way to treat the graves. At the time of writing this review, October 2020, the grass hasn't been cut for two months and was only cut around three times in total this year. (Maybe due to the covid pandemic.)
I have taken my own grass shears and maintained the grass on my family graves myself.
If I had more choice and knowledge about this cemetery, I would not have buried my loved ones here. You pay an awful lot of money for a plot, burial and headstone and expect that they will be respected, unfortunately nobody but the family seems to care.
