Cafe in the Square

There are few better places to go if you're stopping for tea or lunch amidst the old rustic stone streets of St Andrews. Admittedly, this place can become quite crowded on weekends. You might have to wait for a little, but the waiting is worthwhile, as the food here is hearty and sumptuous. Soft and faintly chewy white bread often accompanies meals, such as the thick and delicious cream of mushroom soup. Enjoy the effortlessly cosy atmosphere, and make sure to return here for more delicious food. There is a soft elegance to this place that is eternally appealing.

Loved eating here. Never noticed this cafe before as it's tucked away between the Council building and the Bothy. Our light lunch was excellent, we couldn't fault any of the food brought to the table. The lattes tasted nice and were hot, too. The servers were brilliant, tables were cleaned immediately after the customers left, and they were polite, prompt, and well presented. In fact, a special mention must go to the server with the blue dye in your hair (sorry didn't catch your name, but you were working on the Bank Holiday May 1st) for going that extra mile to make our visit enjoyable. You offered to toast my wife's sandwich, which, although it wasn't on the menu, wasn't a bother. It's small things like that, which makes a huge difference. There are tables available inside and out, and the customer toilets were clean and tidy. Just watch when moving the chairs as they are of good quality and quite heavy.

Lovely little place tucked away. Very accommodation of 6 people and 3 dogs at rush hour lunchtime! Very friendly service, food was delicious and reasonably priced. Would definitely return if I’m back in St Andrews.

I was in St Andrews today with work and during some free time I went off in search of somewhere that would do me soup and a toastie. After nearly admitting defeat and accepting that I was going to have to go to one of the chains that seem to have taken over the town, I stumbled upon the Cafe in the Square. I was welcomed by the very friendly staff, served piping hot soup and a delicious toastie while having a chat with one of the locals. £10 with a drink was in my opinion very reasonable for the area. I will definitely be back next time I am in St Andrews.

Very nice cafe, indoor & outdoor seating in the passage plus a sheltered area to the rear. Great coffee, light meals soup sandwiches panini etc & a selection of cakes available. Very pleasant staff & quick service.

Cosy cafe in the church square. Friendly staff. Sponge cake and coffee for £4.50 is a good deal!

Fantastic homemade soup, with big slices of bread. Gorgeous scones, great service and good price. If I lived I. St Andrews never be away.

Just happened upon this cafe as not all restaurants were open at the time. We had granny in tow in a wheelchair and our wee dog.
Very accommodating and helpful staff helped get the five of us seated comfortably.
Basic choice of sandwiches and soup but lovely.
Nicely presented and very tasty.
Good coffee and baked also.
Prices very reasonable.
Well worth a visit.

What a hidden gem...found this place just by chance,so glad we did... We had soup and a sandwich,soup was outstanding and sandwich was just as good. Service was great and reasonably priced. Definitely be back

We have visited this lovely tucked away cafe a number of times over the years. Immaculately clean and airy. The food is fresh and tasty, the staff friendly and the service quick and efficient. We visited again yesterday and highly recommend.
