A really historic railway station on the border of England and Scotland. Wonderfully restored with lots of original features around the station. There is not much in the way of catering at the station, but beyond the station entrance There are an abundance of shops and places to eat.
Rail services from Carlisle serve - to the North - Dumfries, Glasgow, Edinburgh and beyond. To the South, main line services to London Euston, via Birmingham or the Trent Valley. Regional services run South West to Barrow in Furness via the Western tip of the English Lake District, South East to Leeds via the picturesque Settle & Carlisle route, and due East following the route of Hadrian's Wall to Newcastle and beyond via Hexham. The surrounding area abounds in history and majestic scenery, and is worth a break of journey.

Love what they have done to this station and it really is a gateway to everywhere: Scotland, the Lakes, the West Coast and if you needed to, over to Newcastle.

The roof let's in so much light and the team on the platforms are super helpful.

There's a bar on site.

Such history, such a beautiful building as you enter and leave Carlisle.

Well, I’ve not had such pleasant and helpful staff at a train station. Patiently assisted me in moving on to Glasgow following train cancellations earlier
It’s a clean station with easy to see and read signage.
Toilets were also clean and looked after with a very handy cafe, 301 Miles.
The glass roof makes it feel like a greenhouse, lovely and warm, actually Tshirt weather 😂

Great looking station. Sympathetic face-lift has provided modern metalwork and glazing. The place is clean spacious and comfortable with good facilities.

I love the architecture of this station and it has most definitely benefited from the work to replace/refurbished the stunning glass roof. All the staff I've spoken to have been polite, friendly and helpful. I thanked the cleaning team on my last visit for the wonderful job they are doing under the current circumstances, the toilets are immaculate.
The facilities on both sets of platforms are good, a pub, coffee shop, pop up coffee stall, pop up food (Pie Demand), WHSmith and a lift for those who are not able to use the platform bridge (for platforms 1-3). Taxis are available from the rank outside and across the road to the left, and buses from The Crescent opposite the front entrance, and in front of the Citadel on English Street. There are 20 minute waiting bays out front and a car park to the side accessible just after the hotel. There are numerous benches and seated waiting areas on all platforms with inside waiting rooms available during daytime hours. There's a good ticket office and self-service ticket machines, screens for updates on all arrivals and departures. A Transport Police Office on site and numerous helpful staff on hand.

For book lovers there's the opportunity to pick up a second hand read for a donation, you can leave a book too.

My other favourite thing about this station is the number of special visitors of the train kind, especially the steam variety.

This was a very pleasant station to travel to and from, having large platforms that are accessible for all commuters. The train finished its journey on a platform that has a buffer, which is an efficient feature for certain ones in a station this large. I found the station itself to have been kept in proper condition, with the accompaniment of a glass roof above providing a strong, sturdy shelter. The station sign is totally modern and includes a nice design too, while the direction signs make it fully clear where to go for different purposes! The toilets are quite large and cleanliness was maintained in them when I visited, also the pictures on stream trains on the walls is an intriguing addition. I was fortunate enough to be helped properly by the friendly staff, one member of which announced calmly to us passengers waiting on a platform for the train to Skipton that our service had been delayed.

When Scotland stretched down to Cheshire, Carlisle was its capital. The city is on the border of Scotland. Gretna Green and Annan are just a few miles away.

Most of the residents are of Scottish ancestry being 'borderers' or 'reivers.' To the east is the Solway Firth, the wild, dangerous estuary which separates Scotland from England.

Edward 1, 'hammer of the Scots' used its raging waters to slaughter the 'auld enemy. ' Bloody Cumberland,' not a local fellow at all but another psychopathic Royal, was even worse.

Should anyone at all be surprised that the Scots want independence? And that they look to Europe for reliable friends and trading partners?

Architecturally, the station is beautiful and historic, easy to get around with a simple straight forward layout with a easy to understand platform layout, accessibility friendly to meet the needs of those with mobility issues (Ramps etc), has trains to almost everywhere, very helpful staff too. The amenities inside have a top notch service too

Architecturally Carlisle is a very beautiful station and well worth a look if you are into railways. However, its crowning glory is its helpful and friendly staff, who will do their best to help you find a new connection, if your train is cancelled, help to get you to the right platform if you are less mobile and they have in the past even helped pointing out good places to eat during a long layover and the directions to the Model Railway Shop which sells paper models of the station. Keep up the good work, you are brilliant.

As I step on the train to Glasgow I want to highlight how wonderful Carlisle station is. It was clean, friendly and I was lucky enough to see some old Intercity cars on a siding. I had a coffee and a pastry for £3.45 and used the platform toilet which was immaculate.

Unusually clean for a train station with good facilities and helpful staff.
