Beautiful and peaceful place to explore, if you looking for a place to emerge with calming nature and historical buildings this is the place to come to. Me and my BF we had a retreat day and really enjoyed the walk around the buildings. Unfortunately we arrived too late so could not see the inside of the buildings, but still was very nice for exploring a new area.

Although this is English heritage there is no charge.
An early barn, of which no remains survive today, was built on the site of the current barn around 1300. The current barn dates to the 1330s, probably 1332, and was certainly built before 1367. It originally belonged to the nuns of the nearby Shaftesbury Abbey in Dorset, the richest nunnery in England. It was used for storage of tithes during the Middle Ages. The abbey was entitled to 10% of the produce of its tenants.
When Shaftesbury Abbey was dissolved in 1539, the grange became a farm. By 1914 the building was unnecessary to the farm's requirements and, rather than demolish it, the then owner, Sir Charles Hobhouse, donated the barn to the Wiltshire Archaeological Society. The farm continued in use until purchased by Wiltshire County Council in 1971, with the barn in use until 1974. The barn was designated as a scheduled monument in 1930 and as a Grade I listed building in 1952.
By the 1980s, the weight of the roof was pushing the walls out, necessitating the underpinning of the walls and the installation of iron cross-ties to stop the movement.
A really good example of a tithe barn, definitely worth the visit.

This beautiful Barn sits amongst a complex of buildings.
Access for disability good, it maybe a little difficult to access cross flagstones in entrance of barn in wheelchair.
A Cafe, a shop that sales many items for the home/ garden. A gallery that is open at various times for local exhibitions and to hire for events.
The Tithe barn dates back to 14th century. Its a beautiful example of craftsmanship.
Step inside and imagine your transported back in time. The barn is free to visit. Many films and series have used this location. It also has been used to house Amateur drama plays during the summer.
All the buildings have a history, enjoy the area. The Canal sits one side of the barn complex and the River Avon the other.
Space to relax and take time out of a busy schedule and lifestyle. Soak up history and the surrounding area. The area just down by the river and by the canal have good play areas.

Lovely place to visit, and just a few minutes walk from the centre of Bradford on Avon. There's a kid's playground very close as well as the river and canal.

Love coming here. We live near so come often. The whole area us beautiful. Today the river is flooded which was amazing to see and the sound of the water gushing was lovely. They are building a new natural fence around one area. It will be stunning when it's finished.

This place was something else. I've visited a few tithe barns before but nothing prepares you for the scale and architecture of this building, amazing! Beautifully kept by English Heritage and free entry.
So, before you start complaining about the entry price of places like Stonehenge, remember that your money goes towards the upkeep of incredible places like this!

Really beautiful restored barn. In 2007 I got married in this barn. In 2024 I was drinking mulled cider in this barn. What is there not to like about it...

The Bradford on Avon tithe barn is one of the biggest and finest examples in the country. A mid 14th century barn 150 feet long with a spectacular timber Cruck roof by the River Avon, it is well worth visiting. It was used to Store crops for the winter. Every peasant had to give 10% of his crops to the church (a tithe). The barn belonging to the Barton Grange Manor Farm was owned by Shaftesbury Abbey, the richest Nunnery in the country. After the suppression of the nunnery the barn passed into private hands. For anyone interested in medieval Britain, although not as well known and popular as castles this spectacular Barn with its beautiful setting by the river Avon is well worth checking out.

An amazing 14th century barn that is well worth a visit. Surprisingly there isn't an entrance fee to pay, nor can I understand not being asked for a donation towards its upkeep in this day and age.

Interesting history of a 700 odd years old barn. It's free to visit with a nice cafe & souvenir shop. Right by the Avon River which is a nice walk around Bradford itself.

Magnificent building. The roof in particular is outstanding, huge powerful oak frame trusses supporting a huge stone tile roof. Bearing in mind this building is approximately 700 years old the size of it is truly impressive. And it's free to entre! Well worth a visit.
