What an amazing place to visit. Rich in history and not well known. The ruins are beautifully preserved. A lot of restoration work is carried out. Entry fee is only 5 euros.
The charterhouse was founded in 1194 and Escaladei was the first Carthusian Monastery on the peninsula. I really loved the arch at the entrance, it’s gorgeous. The square with the fountain in the middle is also stunning.
If you in the area you should not miss it.

We visited Cartoixa d'Escaladei in late January 2023. We were surprised to find tour buses as we'd thought we were the only visitors in the region. There were about hundred or so tourists there. The ruins were much more extensive than I’d realized, and I hadn’t expected the renovation work that was in progress. They had restored some monk cells to give a sense of the monk’s everyday life: cloistered, i.e. no talking. They each had a small garden in which to grow flowers. I liked the desks with a view and the amazing history.

Worth the visit-

These old ruins were very cool. The drive up was just magical and serene. It’s about €3.50 to enter and you are free to walk around, check it out and take photos. There are informative panels all over explaining what happened to this monastery and showing you where things used to be. Definitely a cool experience and would highly suggest it!

Amazing historic place. Such a shame it was destroyed but parts are being rebuilt.

A beautiful place full of a rich history. The signs and the reconstruction help bring you into the past. Instead of letting everything fall more into decay they repair. Also very cheap tickets and entry.

MEDIEVAL PRIORAT
The MONTSANT or Priorat mountain range, with a visit to the thousand-year-old monastery of ESCALA DEI, is simply spectacular. The Carthusian monastery was founded in 1194 by concession of Alfonso the Chaste in order to establish a population in the newly conquered lands. The Carthusian monastery of Escaladei is located at the bottom of a valley, protected by the Montsant mountain range.
Enjoy and Visit!!!😊👌

Ruins of Carthesian monastry, hidden in the valley right next to ancient village of Escaladei bring you back to the rich medieval era. You could learn something about life of the wealthy order or just stay and relax watching the surrounding mountains.

Very characterful ruins, with a great romantic feel. Plus the restoration is being done sympathetically giving a real insight into how the monks lived. Well worth a visit

If you are keen on the history of the places you visit, this monastery shouldn’t be overlooked. In a nutshell, Cartoixa d’Escaladei is a cradle of Priorat’s winemaking history since the Carthusian monks brought the winemaking knowledge and techniques to the region in the 12th century. The order lived and ruled over the region for more than 600 years until they were forced to leave the monastery. The monastery is being renovated and now you can visit restored monks’ cells, dining room and a beautiful cloister. And right after the visit go for a wine tasting in Cellers Scaladei.

Very interesting
La Cartoixa d'Escaladei is an old monastery. It's mainly in ruins (even they're restoring it). But it's quite impressive and large. You have its story explained as you walk in it, so you can imagine how it used to be. Its location, surrounded by mountains, it's great.
The price to get in (5€) is very reasonable.

Peaceful, beautiful and quiet. It's easy to see why the monks chose Cartoixa.

The place is beautiful! Of course in ruins but you can still imagine the dimension of it. It’s really well explained as well

A millenia of history, the first Cartoixa in Iberia, highly developed water systems, book print, and the myth about a tree and a dream about a stairway to heaven. An enchanted place, mostly in ruins but slowly being rebuild. The mystery of timelessness. Come and see for yourself.

This ruined monastery has been carefully restored over the last 30 years in order to give visitors a glimpse of the life of its former inhabitants. Well worth a visit.
