Spectacular and magic place, we came here 20 years ago in summer and we were wishing to revisit this ..20 years later, in winter and is clear that authorities are restoring it but as it is so big, it could take 100 years more. We will try to continue visiting, to ensure progress is made 🤣

What a stunning Arab castle. This was once the biggest fortification defending the caliphate from the Christian Kings who repeatedly tried to raid the sophisticated Muslim civilisation. In fact it was a small fortified town with the Alcazar (governor fortress) attached to it. Highly recommend, breathtaking views to the surrounding countryside.

It's an amazing castle, it's unbelievable that it still has so many parts of it in good shape after almost 1000 years, kudos to the government of Soria to keep it as beautiful as it is.

A link with history. Once muslim citadel and fortress, biggest in Europe. Placed over a small hill with incredible views all around. River Duero at its feet. The ruins of its long walls give a glimpse of what it was t the time. Open access.

A rare opportunity to see unspoiled history. A photo can not describe this place. Go there.

If you are into historical sites, then it's definitely worth your time ! This is the largest fortress in Western Europe, with 1,2 km of walls, countless towers , stunning 360 views of the Douro region !
Not many people visit it because of the isolated location, the closest town is Burgo de Osma , approx 15kms.
You need to have a personal transport to reach it .

This is an easy castle the tour. It is free and there’s nobody around as a guardian so you can tour it on your own. It’s a huge castle with magnificent views.

This Castle is well of the beaten path and you will have to have a rental car to get to but it is well worth the drive. There is not a tour guide or any information so you are on your own to explore as you will.

The original castle was built shortly after 756 AD by emir Abd ar-Rahman I of Córdoba, as part of a state ("dawla") policy to control rich landowners and peasants, as well as to try to govern and protect the Central Marches in the Douro Valley against the Christians to the North. In 965, Caliph al-Hakem II rebuilt and expanded the castle, as attested by an inscription over one of the gates.
