Refugio Poqueira

Amazing staying post to break up what would be a 25km hike up Mulhacén.
Turned into a Friday 8km hike from Hoya del Portillo. 14km winter ascent up Mulhacén on the Saturday followed by 8km return to Hoya del Portillo on the Sunday.
Puncuated with excellent food and company in the Refugio on the Friday & Saturday night.

Very nice place with lovely staff. Was there when it was quite calm, so had a shared room for myself. Food they serve is great and big portions to fuel up after a day of walking in Sierra Nevada. Can also buy here water, beers, foods etc.

The sleeping area is upstairs and it can get a bit chilly even in May. A sleeping bag is a good idea even though a comforter is provided. Since it is a mountain refuge, the prices are jacked up, but that is to be expected. On arrival, you get a key to your locker, which is also your bunk bed number. You give them your locker number whenever you order something and pay when checking out. A cool thing is that they provide crocs and packed lunches. It is very clean and you can take a hot shower and recharge devices.

Me and a friend went to climb mount Mulhacen. I can say that I’m experienced rock climber with 35 years in the mountains.
On the morning of 19 October 2020 I fell ill(I suffer from stomach ulcer). The caretaker Rafa didn’t think twice! He immediately offered to take me to hospital, even with a helicopter if necessary. He called the nearest village emergency cervices to await for me, and he himself drove me to the village of Capileira(14kilometres very ruff road)
Every single person from the refuge was worried and helpful in the situation, very professional and organised work!
I can say that this people saved my life!

A part of this, the rooms were very warm and clean, food was delicious 4 course meal in the middle of the mountains at 2500 mtrs,just amazing!
Can’t wait to recover and go back to thank in person to all the people that took care of me! You guys can be proud to be Humans!!!

Refuge staff are very helpful and thoughtful, had a great experience. The food was also really nice. I will definitely stay again, when I'm in the area.

Only called in for a very quick caña, having walked up from Capiliera. Although we didn't hang around (the weather was closing in), it was a fascinating place full of atmosphere. Having never been to a proper refuge before it was really impressive (a step up from the humble UK bothy!).

Great place to stay over night for people who wanna attack Mulhacén. Or have break and place to refill all on hike... A bit expensive ...

If you like hiking in the mountains then this is the place for you. Hot shower, meal, bed, lockers and good conversation.

Great Place! Friendly staff and perfect place to base out of to climb Mulhacen.

Después de subir por el sendero .llegar a ese refugio y comerte una olla de macarrones con carne y tomate es..placer de dioses . Perfecto todo.

Un sitio espectacular a 2500m de altura. Una parada genial para pasar la noche previa a la subida al Mulhacen.
Está muy limpio, tiene taquillas bastante grandes.
Cada habitación tiene el nombre de un pico de Sierra Nevada.
Cogimos el desayuno y cena allí, muy buenos y contundentes. De primer plato puchero de espinacas, una fuente por mesa, una fuente de pasta carbonara y una mouse de pasta, no incluye bebida, ni agua. Como positivo nos dejaron beber la botella de vino que llevábamos en la mochila, muy amables.
Lo negativo es que no hay agua caliente 😱

Refugio de montaña que ofrece multitud de servicios. Buen ambiente y disponen de todo lo necesario para los montañeros/as. Para mi gusto uno de los mejores refugios de montaña del pais y de los que mejor comida ponen, y para los que dicen que es cara es porque tienen poca montaña y refugios vividos, tampoco estan obligados a comer. Para los no montañeros indicarles que es un refugio de montaña, no un hotel. Si buscan comodidad, intimidad y que te arropen y cuenten un cuento por la noche este no es vuestro lugar.

El refugio de poqueira reúne todas las características para vivir una buena experiencia de montaña.
El guarda y los trabajadores ofrecen un trato excelente en todos los sentidos. Los precios son como deben ser para un refugio que está a 2500m. De altitud, las camas son del tamaño que deben ser para tener una buena capacidad de usuarios, la comida buena, de calidad y abundante. Que no hay calefacción? Pues te abrigas y si no te gusta pues no vayas, así de simple.
Esto lo digo por las reseñas que he leído de personas que se piensan que van a un hotel de lujo.
El refugio está perfecto, mucho mejor que otros en los que he estado. Muchas gracias por la atención que recibimos

Rafa, el director del refugio es muy amable y profesional. La comida casera y muy buena. La única pega son las instalaciones q son muy viejas, pero parece ser q en mayo lo reforma entero la Junta . Buena disculpa para volver y disfrutar de la zona

Gran refugio de montaña con servicio de restaurante, duchas, agua caliente, enchufes, recuerdos... Hace falta reservar con antelación. El precio es muy asequible. Las vistas son increíbles y el ambiente que se respira es muy bueno. Las habitaciones son grandes y las camas se encuentran separadas por tablones de madera que permiten intimidad y preservar los espacios personales. Hay que dormir con saco aunque te dan una sábana de usar y tirar para mantener los colchones higiénicos. Dispone de taquillas para guardar los objetos personales.

Somos una pareja que a pesar de haber realizado una ruta sin tomar las precauciones correctas, han teniendo la ayuda de Rafa al teléfono tanto para localizarnos, calmar a nuestros familiares y ponernos en contacto con el equipo de rescate en todo momento, dándonos las indicaciones de manera muy claras y concisas, incluso preocupándose una vez ya solucionado el problema por si seguíamos necesitando ayuda en el pueblo.
No hemos podido tener más suerte de que fuera él quien nos tratase en esos momentos de tanta incertidumbre.
Esperamos tener la oportunidad de ponerle cara a tal profesional como lo es Rafa y en una ocasión más positiva para todos.
