Truly some of the best food in Copenhagen! We didn’t realize how big the portions were, so we ordered four smørrebrød for two people, and we could’ve done with just two! Will be going back!

Copenhagen is outrageously expensive so to avoid a painful credit card hangover, we only ate lunches out.

The Kanal Cafeen is one of the best value eateries in the city with brilliantly attentive staff and stunning presentation. It's a true delve into Danish cuisine and gives a great insight into the varied food culture of the Danes.

You choose a few items from the paper list on the table which are then brought on a platter. It feels a bit like a banquet.

Every dish was superb and all the garnishes were edible.

The beers are really dear (~£9) so to keep prices reasonable, just stick with food.

If you are looking for a traditional Danish restaurant in central Copenhagen, you have come to the right place. With its maritime theme, low ceiling and warm vibes, Kanal-cafeen gives off the impression that it has been in this spot for a long time. The tables are close together, and there is a real comradely and vibrancy in the restaurant as diners eat from delicious Danish food.

"Absolutely thrilled with my recent dining experience at Kanal Cafeen! The food was nothing short of spectacular, boasting a menu that tantalizes the taste buds with every bite. Service was top-notch, thanks to our fantastic waiter, Kim, who went above and beyond to ensure our evening was perfect. Do make sure to book a reservation, as this popular spot fills up fast! The generous portions mean you definitely won't leave hungry. Highly recommend for anyone seeking a standout meal in a cozy setting.

Really good smørrebrød, huge portions. It's a popular place, so there might be a wait to get seated.

Guys, you need a reservation to seat indoors! It’s super crowded during lunch hours. Indoor seating provides a greater atmosphere. Settled for outdoor heated area. One of the nicest smørrebrød in the city! Generous with their serving too! Smoked salmon and the fried fish was awesome.

Despite visiting on the day of the ascension to the throne by King Frederik X (with hundreds of thousands of extra people in the city), we were greeted warmly and had absolutely amazing, fun and great service at our table and, of course wonderful food. We felt welcomed and despite the time constraints, never felt rushed at all.
We had a wonderful time, and I can only give my warmest recommendations.

Smørrebrød heaven! For those of you who don't know, it is an open sandwich. Slice of bread of your choice and a menu with varying fillings. Some are real stackers!
Great experience.
By the way, for lunch it was full of danish people so that says it all.
Loved it and would go back again!

We enjoyed everything we ordered. It was all new to us and it's entirely possible we put the capers or the pickles or sauce on the wrong dish, but whatever, it was good. Below street level dining, bustling place crowded with what appeared to be both locals and tourists, the plsce felt very old fashioned, welcoming and warm.

This was a highlight of my trip. Best Smørrebrød I had while in Copenhagen. Highly recommend the fried herring and the corned ham + Pate.

Great atmosphere along the canal, I recommend if looking for an authentic Danish lunch. Can’t go wrong with drinking a beer and akvavit along with your meal here.

Good place to serve a danish meal! This restaurant is situated in an old building from middle of XVIII century and you can meet some personality frim the royal palace, which is very close. Very tasty meal and the bear is super. Definetly we’ll return!

Restaurant which serves only traditional Danish open sandwiches - smørrebrøds. Especially tasty smørrebrøds with herring and salmon.
In warm period you can take a seat on the terrace on the channel and enjoy beautiful views.

Danish Christmas buffet with work

Nothing wrong with the food according to the Danish but different compared to what I am used to

But the personalized service from the waiter was 6 out of 5, would come back for that alone !

Great smørrebrød, huge portions, great prices. I've come here several times and it's always great. Staff highly efficient, but not exactly welcoming during busy times.
