the best museum i've ever visited, it's almost too digitally fitted for Germany!! There are a lot of stories presented of many foreigners who came to Bremen/Bremerhaven and also of emigrants from Germany to Australia/America! In addition to that, there are a lot of audio stories to listen to which is amazing when it comes to the balance between reading and hearing :)

German Emigration Center, Bremerhaven

This is a simple WOW! A buddy of mine, Richard Vinken recommended us to visit this place!

It’s where most Germans, (even Eastern Europeans) boarded ships over a 200 year period to find a better life on other shores! Predominately USA, but also Canada, South America and Australia!

This exhibition is so well put together that it brings the whole history and relevant stories to life!

Truly a multimedia celebration of an important aspect of the early German desire to find a better life on other shores!

It basically walks you through the process of boarding a ship in Bremerhaven, shows how 3rd class travellers had to be accommodated, and gives an impression of arrival at Ellis Island, and how to proceed further into the Country!

To Fully understood the various upheavals that occured during these times makes it even better to comprehend and I recommend to go on line to all those interested to fully absorb this history

Even what few People know or realise is that the German influence in the US is simple represented by the fact that it is the dominant ethic group of the US even today!

Whatever the case, my photo’s cannot express the true experience, but will give it an inside!

Whoever designed this exhibition did an outstanding job, and this is one place that is a total must to see!

Enjoy!

Such an innovative way to explore a museum and learn about the situation and emigration process. They give you a profile and you walk around in that era moving from your country to destination keeping yourself in the shoes of that person. Interesting fact that all of you will have a different person, come from different years, have a story linked.
Must visit museum

Nice museum. Really shows the journey the migrants made in the past. You can even follow the story of a migrant attached to you.
The only downside is that there is almost no information about current migration, some statistics or information about how migration currently is in Germany would be nice and really needed!

If you are an American with German ancestry, this museum is amazing in helping to get a better understanding of why you speak English and live in America. The lives of the immigrants from Germany were difficult and worth remembering.

A really wonderful museum that is interactive and informative, and set up that it tells the (moving) stories of so many in the world who took a chance at a better life. It's also very educational, and interesting to see how other visitors respond to deep questions of our time. Simply a must visit (...ps, I got startled by the real life size mannequins, they were so real!)

The Deutches Auswandererhaus, also known as the German Emigration Center, Bremerhaven, is an incredible recreation of the fraught travels experienced by millions of people who migrated from Europe to mainly the US, South America and Australia.

You can see realistic mock ups of the conditions people endured on long sea voyages, in ships cabins and other areas. There are also exhibits detailing how they were affected by the unfolding history and political issues of the time.

You also learn very detailed, personal stories of some of the travellers, with their story only coming to an end in the last four or five decades alongside colour photos, and other memorabilia.

The further you go the more incredibly fascinating it all becomes. There are even computers you can use to research your own family history.

This is a wonderful, interesting and very important museum that everyone should have a chance to visit. Very highly recommended.

You were given a tour of the emigration process from leaving the docks thru the arrival into the US. You got an impression of what it was like to leave your home, family & life for an unknown. You were shown the vast differences in comfort & amenities of the classes on board as well as the difficulties they encountered upon arrival. The family research center at the end is very nicely set up with helpful staff.
I very much enjoyed the experience.

See a bit of what folks braved to settle other parts of the world. Appreciate the honesty on history including the parts we wish were different. Worthwhile couple of hours!

Sooooooooo well done! Very interesting and cleverly interactive as each visitor is assigned an emigrant and an immigrant to follow during the museum visit.

This is a must-see museum, allocate at least 2.5hrs to completely experience the whole set-up which was ingenious. You can play along as one of the immigrants and its available in English. Look for Levi Strauss, Donald Trump and Elvis Presley in the museum, they are all part of the immigrants history. Totally worth the entry fees!!!

I loved it there.
The message is strong and the exhibits are amazing. It really gives you a fell for the things people had to endure. It doesn't just tell but shows.

This museum is really special for the State of Bremen since it illustrates the migration waves from Bremen and Bremerhaven to the USA and the conditions to which the German migrants were forced to migrate there all these decades ago. I went there with my co-students from Hochschule Bremen.

An immersive experience. A journey through time and space as an emigrant over the past hundred years with historical antique and plenty of information. Can easily spend a couple of hours here.
A recent addition on immigrants coming to Germany for a better life.

City in Germany

Bremerhaven is a city on the east bank of the Weser estuary in northern Germany. It forms an exclave of the city-state of Bremen. The River Geeste flows through the city before emptying into the Weser. Bremerhaven was founded in 1827 as a seaport for Bremen, and it remains one of the busiest ports in the country.
