This was the longest hike, 20 miles, I’ve accomplished. During January it was intensely hot. Wear good hiking shoes, bring a lot and I mean a lot of water. I didn’t prepare as needed but luckily my boyfriend let me drink his water and saved me from heat stroke. Gorgeous views. Steep trails, minimal shade, super rocky. At one point we had to create our own trails because this isn’t one that many hike. Down the way there is the best empanadas and hot sauce. Thank me later it’s all I crave.

This is a great hiking trail starting right beside the El Morado park, but outside of it (so no bothersome rules nor restrictions); the coordinates here at Google Maps are for the trailhead, where there's also an unmarked area for parking your vehicle. Just go there and follow the well-blazed trail starting at the cenotaph/memorial and heading East/Northeast by the mountainside through the valley, with the Volcán River to your right.

Walk straight by the turnout to the San Jose mine (but feel free to stop for a visit, just don't try to enter as there's a grave risk of accidents as warned). The start of the trail, up until the mine turnout, is a little rough but it levels off and becomes an easy walk just a little further (it's apparently an old road), so keep on walking and enjoy the wondrous views of rock formations all around and the snow-covered San Jose volcano in front of you.

I suggest you start early and pack a lunch and plenty of water; I started late and could not go all the way but had to turn back so as not to have to hike through darkness (which is never recommended).

Be safe and keep away from the border (it's a long and probably fatal fall to the river, far below) and take away with you everything you brought (please leave no garbage nor any traces), help keep this place pristine so the next visitors can enjoy it as much as you will.

EDIT: so I came back for another hike 2 months later (beginning of winter instead of end-of-autumn) and the place has turned into a snow paradise, doubly beautiful. This time I hiked it up to the San Jose mine, took some pictures, and hiked right back because it was turning late (don't forget the sun sets much earlier in winter). Doubly recommend, but now you must take care also not too slip on the iced trail (try to step in the soft spots) and again, do *not* try to enter the mine: some vandals pried open one of the iron bars that block the entrance, which might tempt you in, but by all means resist the temptation; the snowy peaks and unearthly iced rock formations outside are more than enough reward for the effort, see my new pictures.
