A jewel among Toronto cemeteries, tricky to get into , well maintained, beautiful monuments, a unique blend of 1800's surrounded by 2022 .. a must visit .. I believe they have visit days during the summer season

This is a very interesting cemetery that is hidden behind stores and office buildings, a definite throw back to old Toronto. My gripe is that it is NEVER open. In 20 + years I've only been able to go in twice (unless you climb in further west), yet it's very well maintained but closed up. What gives? Is it only open a few hours a week? Both times I visited the maintence people were working further in.

I've gotten lucky and managed to get in here a few times and wander around when the gate has been unlocked, but it really should be open to the public all the time, so two stars. if it was more accessible, 4 stars at least, its beautiful and in a great location.

I was shocked to see the low review ratings until I realized that this beautiful location is locked up. I used to live nearby and many times went for walks there - architecturally and historically a first rate experience, to say nothing of the sense of peace strolling among the markers reading life stories. I understand the reason, but here's a perfect opportunity for the city to operate a relatively low cost custodial service during the daylight hours and lock it up overnight.
Nearby Mount Pleasant is wonderful, but Saint Michael's has it's own sense of peace mere steps away from the bustle of Yonge and St Clair.
A real shame.

Unlike some other cemeteries in Toronto, like Mount Pleasant to the north, this gem is kept locked and does not permit public access. It's a damn shame considering its location. I understand there is a fear of it being overused as a throughway at the expense of landscaping and mourners privacy, but again, it seems other cemeteries have been able to successfully embrace public access.

No way to get there. I wish Google could have told me it was locked up before trying to explore the neighbourhood I just moved into.

What a shame..always closed. Why?
Such an important part of Toronto's history.
